Hi Mark! I turned 20 today! If you don’t mind me asking, what keyword mechanic that has been released in the last year is your favorite and why?

It might be a different answer tomorrow, but today I’ll say back-up from March of the Machine (designed by Ari Nieh). Happy Birthday!

Great Designer Search

New 08 Jul 2023 Asked by j-waffles 29 Comments

You’ve mentioned how GDS requires a lot of setup and infrastructure to do. I don’t really know very much about the last two, would you mind explaining what kinds of things went into it, and also what it was?

You could enter if you were 18 or older and capable of working in the U.S. To make it to each next step, you had to qualify.Step 1 - Answer 10 essay questions (3000 words total).Step 2 - Take a multiple choice test on Magic knowledge.Step 3 - Do a design test.Top 8 compete in a competition that resembles a reality show that tests a skill (think Project Runway or Top Chef). Each week there is a design challenge. Judges review all the entries and give public notes. The person doing the worst overall is eliminated. The top three get flown to Wizards for a day of interviews and other tests. The winner gets a 6 month internship in R&D. The top three of each of the three Great Designer Searches, as well as a few others, were eventually hired full time by Wizards (although not all in R&D).Top 3 Finalists:GDS1 Alexis Jansen - winnerKen Nagle - runner-upGraeme Hopkins - thirdGDS2 Ethan Fleischer - winner Shawn Main - runner-upScott Van Essen - thirdGDS3Ari Nieh - winner Jeremy Geist - runner-up Chris Mooney - third

New White Color Rep

Now that unfortunately Ari Nieh isn’t working at WOTC anymore, who’s the new white representative in the council of colors?

Chris Mooney is the current white representative on the council. I interviewed them about their role on my podcast earlier this year:https://cdn.transistor.fm/file/transistor/m/shows/21454/dca1f3bff2bf45033a2aa53d02f73ac7.mp3

I love the the idea that Ari Nieh discussed on your podcast of a limited set with 15 colour pairs (the usual ten, plus one for each colour plus colourless). Please make this happen one day!

Role in Brothers' War and Lacrosse Design

New 10 Mar 2022 Asked by honor-basquiat 17 Comments

"I was on the exploratory design and vision design team for each, and I worked one-on-one with each of the vision design leads (Mark Gottlieb abs Ethan Fleischer, respectively) as the person who oversees vision design." Cool. Did you also have a similar role for The Brothers' War set and Lacrosse?

Yes, for Brothers’ War. Vision design was led by Ari Nieh. I led the vision design for Lacrosse.

Recognizing Fellow Designer Ari Nieh

New 23 Feb 2022 Asked by the-machine-orthodoxy 54 Comments

I'd like to give you an opportunity to give a shout-out to a fellow designer who challenges you in a way that makes you a better designer, that brings out your very best because they are able to see the flaws and helps you make a better product.

That’s all of R&D, but if I have to throw out a name, I’ll throw out Ari Nieh. She was my strong second on Neon Dynasty and constantly pushed me to make things better.

Design Leadership for Sets

New 01 Feb 2022 Asked by honor-basquiat 42 Comments

Interesting. So you're not leading design for Dominaria United OR The Brothers War? Or did you leave those out? If so, I'm kind of bummed you aren't leading Dominaria United. The Dominaria set was brilliant, one of your masterpieces, maybe your greatest of all time.

I oversee vision design and I was on both teams (exploratory design and vision design), but led neither. Ethan Fleischer led Dominaria United and Ari Nieh led Brothers’ War.

White Designs in Recent Sets

Hey Mark! Just wanted to say I’ve been super happy with White designs in recent sets, not just in terms of their power level but also how much fun many of them have been to play with. Kudos to the team, and a shoutout to Ari Nieh!

Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying it.

Understanding Stet's Unique Design

New 04 Nov 2021 Asked by selein 201 Comments

I really like the design of Stet, Draconic Proofreader lately. His design is quite different than a lot of other silver bordered cards. Could I ask a little about the thought process designing him and what is going on in his art?

When I was figuring out what we wanted the new cards to do in Unsanctioned, it dawned on me that we’d never had an Un-Dragon, so I allocated one of the red slots to be that. My note to the designers was I wanted the Dragon to have a job not associated with Dragons. I believe Ari Nieh was the one who made the first version of this card. She made it a proofreader because she liked the idea of having it remove text off of cards. The art, by the way, shows Stet (an editing term) turning “mice” into “ice” by cutting off the “m”.

Appreciation for Cleave Mechanic

New 28 Oct 2021 Asked by jestercrowne 49 Comments

I just want to say that I love Cleave. I've been wanting a mechanic like it for years. Thank you.

You have Ari Nieh to thank. She designed it in Streets of New Capenna exploratory design. We didn’t end up using it there, so Mark Gottlieb suggested it to Adam for Crimson Vow’s use.

Improvements For White's Performance

New 04 Mar 2020 Asked by petruscaex 56 Comments

Just seen Tolarian Community College's interview with Ari Nieh. It's really nice to have both you and him listening daily to White player's feelings. Based on the work you guys made for Theros Beyond Death I think that maybe it won't take so long for us to see White shine again : )

It is an issue we are actively working on. We just work far ahead, so something we do today can take two to three years to see. Luckily, this isn’t a problem we started working on today.

White's Role in Card Advantage

New 04 Mar 2020 Asked by deathtouchroadrunner 30 Comments

Ari Nieh was on TCC and Reddit had a big conversation about it. Many comments are a bit meh, but one person wrote a rather good longish post about White being "the color of huge edifices, cities, whole societies, and building for future generations in a way that makes individual creatures little more than cogs," (paraphrase) and that this should be mechanically represented by "invest now to pay off later" mechanics, and thought that was also how White should approach card advantage. Yea or Nay?

We’re working on finding for white was impulsive draw is to red, something that feels core to the color identity yet helps with card flow. It is not going to be using flavor to justify Divination (aka straight up card draw).

Creating Alexander Clamilton

New 29 Jan 2020 Asked by theoreticalmagician 88 Comments

Did you design Alexander Clamilton? I know that you go to BroadwayCon with your daughter every year, and I've invented a story in my head that you were inspired by her love for Hamilton or something like that. I don't suppose that's the actual story?

I wanted a Clamfolk. The original design was Clamity Jane, but I didn’t think enough people would get the reference. I asked the Pit to come up with a good punny clan name. Chris Mooney suggested Alexander Clamiton. I said that was it, then he and Ari Nieh designed it.

Ari Nieh Podcast Idea

New 19 Oct 2019 Asked by wobbles 13 Comments

Have you considered doing a ride to work with Ari Nieh? Like a follow up on GDS3 one year later?

The problem is Ari lives nowhere near me, so he’d have to drive out to my home to do a podcast with me. I’m up for it if Ari is, but it is a big ask.

Great Designer Search Success

New 20 Mar 2019 Asked by blessedmulligan-blog 50 Comments

when you say the GDS were "successful", do you mean they were good events for the community, they produced good designers, or both?

They served their key purpose: finding new Magic designers. For example, Ari Nieh, the winner of GDS3 just started a full time position in R&D.
