Anguished Unmaking

Storytelling in WAR

New 02 Nov 2019 Asked by dispel-for-the-win 36 Comments

Followup to my question yesterday. Yes, WAR did feel different and eventful, but it felt like it was missing something, I think because the consequences weren't prominently displayed on the cards the way they used to be (like with Anguished Unmaking). As I mentioned yesterday I didn't know that Ugin was trapped, because it's not on the cards (at least not prominently), nor do I know what the current state of Ravnica is. It felt like a lot was left off the cards so it could be saved for the book.

Most of the story beats were on the cards, way more than a normal set. It is true though that Bolas’s (not Ugin) final fate wasn’t shown.

Band Name Creativity

New 02 Apr 2017 Asked by packratprincess 81 Comments

The sheer amount of card names that would make an awesome band name is staggering... But limiting the pool to SOI/EMD. I'd have to say, I'd make a symphonic metal band named "Docent of Perfection", the album would be named "Forgotten Creation", and the flagship songs would be "Anguished unmaking" and "Declaration in Stone"

: )

Reanimation Cost Concerns

New 23 Feb 2017 Asked by goku332 19 Comments

MaRo, I think given the recent push exile has recieved (Anguished Unmaking anyone?), reanimation spells should be more aggressively costed as well. 5 CMC reanimation spell is not competitive to a 3 CMC instant exile spell.

It’s just not an area we want to push as it circumvents the main safety valve in the game.

Story Team Props

New 29 Jul 2016 Asked by meandering-monotreme 53 Comments

Also, I'd like to give props to the story team for making the "spoiled" plot points from the cards (anguished unmaking, imprisoned in the moon) different when they come along in the story than they actually seemed on the card. I don't normally read the story, but reading those two articles was worth it because i came away with a different perception on the block than i had before i read them. Well done.

I’ll pass along your kind words.

Story Moments

New 30 May 2016 Asked by lazcarno 82 Comments

About story moments on cards. People seem to be forgetting (or not realizing) that neither BFZ nor SOI *actually* had the ends of their stories spoiled on cards; only moments that LOOKED like the end on the card, but turned out to be the PENULTIMATE story moment. The ending of the BFZ story comes AFTER Ulamog is bound, when Ob Nixilis shows up to ruin everybody's day. And the story article that goes with Anguished Unmaking makes it clear that the REAL punchline of the story has yet to drop.

A fine point.

SOI Storytelling

New 29 May 2016 Asked by berah-ronah 50 Comments

I just want to say that I loved how you collectively handled the SOI story and avacyn's death, especially since the real spoiler/climax of the story is (SPOILERS) realizing that Avacyn's existence was keeping something much worse from entering innistrad, not the fact that she died

I agree that there was plenty of context left to learn even after seeing the card. I should note, by the way, that I’m not saying there’s no room for improvement or that showing Anguished Unmaking when we did was ideal. My point is that a trading card game story is not going to be told like a movie or a book. We’re a different medium which means we have to tell stories a little differently.

Comparing to Captain America

New 29 May 2016 Asked by ccgnick 36 Comments

Re: Anguished Unmaking, my problem was actually not that we knew Avacyn died, but that we knew Jace, Sorin, and Tamiyo DIDN'T die. It took away all the suspense in the moment, I thought. When Sorin was getting hurt, I just thought, "Well, this fight is pointless, because we know he survives."

Captain America takes a beating in his last movie and I knew he wasn’t going to die. How is that any different?

Storytelling Technique

New 28 May 2016 Asked by spaismanspif 51 Comments

RE: the Anguished Unmaking debate -- There is a very good book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez called "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" where from the beginning you know the main character is going to die. The suspense is in how and why he dies. While I understand people's complaints, and would warn Creative to be smart with their storytelling, this type of thing can be done well.

There are many examples of the ending being foretold right at the beginning of the story. Sometimes it’s less about what happens than why it happens.

Crisis Resolution Perspective

New 28 May 2016 Asked by 4blackout 19 Comments

I'm very happy you are bringing up the Anguished Unmaking debate again. It's very reassuring to know that you guys are working on it. :) However, I'd like to point out that it doesn't spoil a "crisis point", it spoils the resolution of a crisis.

It’s not the resolution. What happens because of it is the resolution.

Story Spoilers Discussion

New 28 May 2016 Asked by b4da1r 35 Comments

I for one don't think that revealing Anguished Unmaking is a spoiler - it seems like the source material, and the background story just a supplement. Watching a movie doesn't spoil it's plot, even if preceding details are forthcoming.

Stories often foreshadow events. In fact, starting a story at the crisis point and then having “___ hours earlier” is almost cliche.

Land Destruction Concerns

New 28 May 2016 Asked by kvanever 30 Comments

Does Anguished Unmaking not target lands because of power concerns or fun concerns? I guess I'm asking if three life is enough downside to allow Stone Rain effects at three mana in Standard.

Fun concerns. We do not like efficient & flexible tournament-viable land destruction.

Anguished Unmaking Reveal

New 28 May 2016 Asked by abalidoth 20 Comments

Just wanted to say that I'm completely happy with how you handled the reveal of Anguished Unmaking. In fact, it made me even more excited for the second set. I've just been seeing a lot of negativity about it.

The opinions are mixed. As always I more often respond to complaints so it seems like more people disliked it than liked it which isn’t the case.

Managing Story Revelations

New 28 May 2016 Asked by 4blackout 28 Comments

I've never been more invested in the Magic story than now, and the writers are doing an amazing job. High fives to them! However, I am sad beyond words that you revealed the climax of the story with Anguished Unmaking before we got a chance to experience it first hand. You could've waited until the second set to print it or just published the stories before revealing it. Can you promise to do better next time?

The story team is working how to balance surprise with making sure everyone learns the story.

Anguished Unmaking Timing

New 19 May 2016 Asked by melodious12 91 Comments

What was the reasoning for putting Anguished Unmaking in SOI instead of EM? I feel as if it took all of the surprise out of the story because we all knew what was going to inevitably happen.

Because it’s the ending of the first half of the story. Trading card games are a tricky story telling medium because we don’t control the order that people see the pieces. As such, the joy is in the details not in the structure. It’s less about what happened than why and how. Remember Romeo & Juliet starts by telling you how it tragically ends.

Card Reprintability

New 02 Apr 2016 Asked by gteeg 33 Comments

Is a card like anguished unmaking generic enough to be reprinted or does the fact that it's tied to a story moment make it harder?

We can always change the art and flavor text on a new printing.

Anguished Unmaking Moment

Does Anguished Unmaking represent a cliffhanger moment or a dramatic moment?

Why not both?

Chronology Uncertainty

New 02 Apr 2016 Asked by damnyoumodoshuffler 9 Comments

Reasking this with a correction to the question: Is Anguished Unmaking the last card in the SOI story chronologically, or is it something else?

I do not know the card concepts well enough to answer that question.

Eldritch Moon Timeline

New 01 Apr 2016 Asked by thisworlddeservestobedevoured 21 Comments

Does Eldritch Moon events take time after Anguished Unmaking or they share some time with SOI events?

I believe they are all after. Double check with Doug.

Card Story Variations

New 29 Mar 2016 Asked by supaquazi 42 Comments

In order to hide the outcome of story moments, would it be possible to print multiple conflicting versions of key event cards? Like if we also had a version of Anguished Unmaking where Avacyn kills Sorin. I'd be very curious to read if I saw both.

That seems like it will only make the story harder to follow.

Art Matching Mechanics

New 28 Mar 2016 Asked by bfbonatto 30 Comments

RE Anguished Unmaking: Personally I'd rather the card depicted the confrontation of Avacyn and Sorin not nescessarily the resolution of said battle.

The problem is the art needs to match what the card mechanically does.
