Whitemane Lion

Comparing Gating and Flicker Effects

New 02 Nov 2020 Asked by a-higher-stereometry 23 Comments

In terms of relative position on the storm scale, which would you say is more likely to come back: "gating" effects à la Whitemane Lion/Kor Skyfisher, or "flicker" effects like Cloudshift/Glimmerpoint Stag?

We do both in most sets.

Whitemane Lion's Color Alignment

Is Whitemane Lion back in white's slice of the color pie? I am sure there was a time in the past few years when you said that bouncing your own creature wasn't white.

White has been able to bounce its own stuff for many years.

Artwork Confusion

"Whitemane Lion exists in two versions, one with the art closer cropped in." Are you sure you're not talking about Jamuraan Lion, from Visions, rather than Whitemane Lion, from Planar Chaos?

I was mistaken and talking about Jamuraan Lion. Thanks for catching my mistake.

Whitemane Lion Rarity

Speaking of Whitemane Lion, is that an example of something you would no longer do at common in a standard set due to NWO?

We wouldn’t put it at common because White isn’t primary or secondary at Flash anymore not because of New World Order.

Planar Chaos Insights

Why is it that during Planar Chaos you decided that shades (Shade of Troakir) and flash (Whitemane Lion, Stonecloaker, Mantle of Leadership) could have been a part of White's mechanical niche? Also with Black getting tapping (Thirst -> Melancholy and Master Decoy -> Rathi Trapper) and Swerves (Imp's Mischief and Muck Drubb)?

Planar Chaos was about us imaging “what if”. We went back to the beginning and just thought about different mechanical choices we could have made to reflect color philosophy. The point of the set was to show that although Magic made certain choices others could have made sense. White, for instance, has a strong military and army theme and the power and toughness pumping could have fit that. Note that white occasionally does get both power and toughness pumping but usually not together. White getting flash is a nod toward white’s more reactive nature and defensiveness. Black got tapping and redirecting (what we call “swerving”) to play into its ability to manipulate.
