Frost Mechanic in White Dragon

New 27 Dec 2021 Asked by absolutelynot3 49 Comments

So I stumbled across White Dragon today and am wondering--is the frost mechanic here a bend, a break or a growth in a new direction for mono white? I know it can do it when conjoined with blue but I don't think I've seen it much in just white before.

It’s a bend, but not a huge one.

White Dragon Color Conundrum

On the subject of chromatics, you mentioned white dragon would be blue. While theyre smarter than humans, they're dumb by dragon standards and primarily fight as instinctual rage monsters. Wouldn't they be red or green?

I picked blue because their breath is ice.

Appreciating Dragons' Color Match

New 30 Jun 2021 Asked by gamma-3 51 Comments

Just want to throw my voice in that I appreciate making the cycle of dragons MtG colors match their scales; it was a parallel I had noticed long before AFR had been announced and I'm one of the many who would have been disappointed had it not paid off.

I’m pretty sure you are in the majority on this. Making the White Dragon blue would have caused endless headaches.

Color of Chromatic Dragons

New 30 Jun 2021 Asked by petruscaex 97 Comments

Hey Mark, can you comment on the MTG color of Chromatic Dragons? I get that it sounds aesthetically fine to put each dragon with the MTG color corresponding to its scales, but looking at the dragon's characteristics it's weird that the White dragon is White and not Blue...

Having a cycle of dragons that are white, blue, black, red and green, but not in the corresponding color would have made way more upset players than what we did.

Creature Types in Color Combinations

I'd like to point out that of the Big 5 creature types, almost all have appeared in every two color combinations EXCEPT a red & white dragon, white & black demon, and blue & green sphinx.

Good to know.

Color Shifted Set Possibility

When it comes to the colors of magic. Could we see another color shifted set? Green goblins, black soldiers, white dragon's, red fish, and blue beasts?

While the novelty of different is always appealing, the continuity of the color wheel is a cornerstone of the game’s health.

D&D Dragons Correction

New 14 Feb 2017 Asked by apocalypticvalraven 33 Comments

"Yes, Dungeons and Dragons debuted with exactly five dragons, one matching each color of magic. Four of their five habitats also match the Magic basic lands, only white dragons (whose habitat is arctic) don't." Not exactly- OD&D debuted with the Black dragon (swamps), Blue dragon (deserts), Green dragon (Forests), Red dragon (volcanoes), and White dragon (Arctic), as well as the Golden dragon which had no particular favored location. So, six dragons, two of which do not match MtG's lands.

Iconic Creatures Color Shift

New 15 Jan 2014 Asked by mashblaster 25 Comments

Is a black angel doable? I like the idea of a chaos order, iconic creatures supporting off colors. A white dragon is also intriguing. Does the color wheel, and creature philosophy support this?

We are very careful moving the iconic creatures (angel, sphinx, demon, dragon, hydra) completely out of their core color. We do it on rare occasion but it is not something we do often or lightly.

Unseen Dragon Colors

We've gotten dragons in every color pairing except Boros and Nephilim colors. Will we ever see a Red/White Dragon?

I’m sure one day it’s bound to happen as dragons are our most popular creature type.
