Birthday Request: Squirrel Trivia

New 03 Apr 2021 Asked by thegatherers 42 Comments

Hi Mark, My Birthday is April 2nd and this past year magic has made a big difference in my life as I've combined my passion for video making and brewing commander decks. I love to make random tribal decks so I'd like a piece of trivia about squirrels in magic.

The first card that was supposed to have Squirrels was Waiting in the Weeds, but the art came back showing cats, so we had to change it to Cat tokens. Happy Birthday!

Unexpected Artwork Changes

There seem to be quite a few stories of old cards where a card had to be changed because the art that was turned in had something unexpected (Waiting in the Weeds, Goblin Scouts). Does this still happen sometimes, or is that a thing of the past and why?

No, a couple things have changed over the years. First, our art directors have become much more knowledgeable about what matters mechanically. Second, we’ve fine tuned the system to catch issues along the path.

It's my birthday today. Any chance I can get some squirrel trivia?

The first card that was supposed to make Squirrel tokens was the card Waiting in the Weeds. The art description said you couldn’t see the creatures, just their eyes in the darkness. The artist drew cats, not squirrels, out in the open, so we had to change the card to produce Cat tokens.Happy Birthday!

Today is my 30th birthday! Can you give me some trivia about cats in magic?

Waiting in the Weeds, from Mirage, one of the early Cat token makers was supposed to create Squirrels. The art description said to just see eyes in the darkness of the woods, but the artist drew Cats so we changed the card to make Cats instead of Squirrels. Happy Birthday!

My ask might have gone unnoticed, so here it is again: It was my birthday the other day, and for my birthday trivia I was hoping you could give me some trivia on my favorite tribe, Cats. Thanks!

One of the earliest cards to reference cars was Waiting in the Weeds from Mirage. The design called for squirrels but through a miscommunication the artist was unaware and drew cats which made us change the card to producing cats. Happy Birthday!

Hi MaRo! It's my birthday today and I've been playing Magic for 20 years this year! If you have time could I please ask for some trivia on Squee, Hanna, or squirrels? The Weatherlight saga is one of my favorite Magic arcs! Thanks for all you do and especially for fighting the good fight for squirrels!

Squee got his name from the original flavor text for Relentless Assault. Hanna is the daughter of Barrin, Urza’s right hand man. The first card with squirrels was supposed to be Mirage’s Waiting in the Weeds but the art came back showing cats so we had to change it. Happy Birthday!

Hi there, today is my birthday and I was wondering if I could get some trivia on my favorite creature type, squirrels. Thanks :)

The first squirrel card was Liege of Hollows from Weatherlight. It was supposed to be Waiting in the Weeds in Mirage but the art description said we could only see the creatures’ eyes hiding in the weeds and never specified what kind of creature. The artist drew cats so we changed the card to make cats. Happy Birthday!

Mirage Art Direction

"The art director of Mirage was famous for not catching things the artist weren’t supposed to do such as draw angels as male." Got any more anecdotes about this individual?

Sunweb was originally supposed to be unable to block white creatures until the art came back with it blocking a white creature. Waiting in the Weeds was supposed to be squirrels when it came back with cats. Goblin Scouts as supposed to be dwarves when it came back with goblins.

Squirrel Support Trivia

Hey me rosewater! It's my birthday today and I was wondering if I could get some neat trivia of facts about squirrel support

The very first card that was supposed to make squirrels was the Mirage card Waiting in the Weeds. The art description said that you couldn’t see the creatures, just their eyes so it didn’t specify that they were squirrels to the artist. The artist then drew them not in the shadows and drew them as cats so we had to change the token type. Happy birthday!
