Two-Headed Giant

Starting Life Total

New 31 Mar 2024 Asked by ashenai 19 Comments

Was any thought given to changing the starting life total to numbers other than 20 for formats other than Commander and Two-Headed Giant? It seems like it could be an interesting and simple knob to turn for controlling the speed of a format.

WOE 2HG Praise

New 05 Sep 2023 Asked by mollyjames 33 Comments

I played Two Headed Giant for my prerelease, and I wanted to let you know that sealed WOE 2HG is a blast. The Role mechanic in particular added a really fun layer of puzzle solving, both to play and deck construction. The larger card pools really helped the synergies of this set stand out. Games went much faster than expected too. Very few games went to time, the store I was at even managed to end a round early! I highly recommend it for fans of the format.

You heard it here. Give Wilds of Eldraine Two-Headed Giant a try, if that’s a format you enjoy.

Two-Headed Giant Insights

Hi, my previous message must have been lost in the mail. It was my birthday a couple of days ago, can you give me some birtday trivia in my favorite format: Two Headed Giant? If that is too broad, trivia on the 2HG set Battlebond. Thanks :)

We’ve done a lot of testing and Two-Headed Giant is one of the best formats for parents to teach their kids how to play. It allows the child to learn while working with their parent, who can oversee what is happening. Happy Belated Birthday!

Witch King Wording

New 02 Jun 2023 Asked by monopurplecontraptions 47 Comments

The wording for Witch King of Angmar seems strange. I know Magic has a lot of corner cases, but there’s still no scenario in which multiple opponents could have attacked you in the same turn.

About how often do you need to remind people that 2-headed giant exists

Apparently, about once a week. : )

Multiplayer Dynamics

Hi mark. I love Magic. But when I try to get new people to Magic, one of the complains i hear the most is that when one player dies, they have to watch the other players finish the game. I also think this is one of the biggest weaknesses of multiplayer Magic (i’m aware that it was designed as a 2-player game). Did you ever consider creating a play variant or a product that addresses this issue?

Again (I believe this is the third time I’ve answered this specific question), take a look at Two-Headed Giant. It’s a four-person multiplayer variant where everyone is in the game until it ends.

I answered this a few days ago. Check out Two-Headed Giant.

I suggest trying two-headed giant. It’s a four person multiplayer format where all four players play for the whole game.

There are multiplayer formats where everyone plays until the game ends. The two examples that come to mind off the top of my head: Two-Headed Giant and Star Magic.

Two-Headed Giant Popularity

Since there's been a lot of talk about 2-Headed Giant lately, I thought I'd chime in that the store I've been doing prereleases at has been doing one prerelease each set as a 2HG event and it's tons of fun. There's definitely one store that would love to see more 2HG!

I too am a fan of Two-Headed Giant.

Prospects for Battlebond 2

I loved Battlebond and I've seen nothing but universal acclaim for the set online. Can you tell us what players need to do to make a Battlebond 2 more likely and successful?

I guess seeing more sanctioned Two-Headed Giant tournaments.

Battlebond Popularity Issues

What are the issues with battlebond that put it at the bottom of your potential return list? (among Planechase, Archenemy, Conspiracy, and Battlebond)

Two-headed giant just isn’t all that popular as a format.

Romcom Set Idea

New 07 Aug 2022 Asked by jimhensonreject 120 Comments

My vote: the romcom set is a multiplayer focused non-premier set, perhaps even being a battlebond style two-headed giant focused draft set. That way, you "choose your partner" both in the game and out! :)

Multiplayer Games Perspective

New 07 Jun 2022 Asked by lichtsula 87 Comments

You've said that you usually don't like multiplayer because you dislike politicking but I think that maybe you've just been playing with the wrong people. My playgroup doesn't do any of that, we all play to win fairly, and multiplayer is by far the most fun I have with Magic. With more players, game states get insanely complicated and crazy awesome things start to happen, which are things rarely seen in a 1v1 game. To each, their own, but I think you're missing out.

Two things: 1) One of the great things about Magic is it’s ability to be different things to different players. I’m super happy that Commander exists as it allows so many people to play Magic in a way that’s meaningful to them. Just because it’s not how I enjoy Magic doesn’t mean I don’t want it to exist. I spend a lot of time, while creating Magic, making design decisions to make players happy that appreciate different aspects of the game, and that includes Commander. But just because I enjoy different aspects of playing than you doesn’t make my way any less fun. 2) From a game design standpoint, “political” means that some decisions are based on an element of diplomacy, that players have the ability to talk to each other to influence how their opponents choose to play. In many formats (one-on-one, Two-Headed Giant, Emperor, Star Magic, etc.) there is no diplomacy because the rules dictate priorities. Being political is not a bad thing, it’s just an element of gameplay. If you’re playing a multiplayer game and the rules don’t dictate your priorities, it’s political. The only way for it not to be political is if you have house rules that dictate your actions (“you must always attack the opponent with the highest life total.”). If your opponents are able to suggest what you should do, it’s political.

Preference in Multiplayer Formats

New 31 May 2022 Asked by tempus-vulpes 41 Comments

I remember you saying that part of why you aren't a huge fan of Commander is because of the politics aspect. I was curious of if that holds true for other multi-player formats as well, and if so, would you be more interested in cEDH where despite the multi-player style the political aspect is minimized since there is more of a focus on winning as best/quickly/overwhelmingly/correctly as you can?

My favorite multiplayer format is Two-Headed Giant which has no politics.

Wording Differences in Controls

New 15 Mar 2022 Asked by lizardwizard100 46 Comments

Hey Mark,Is there a reason for the wording difference “you don’t control” VS “your opponents control” ?For example… see “Plague Wind” VS “Ruinous Ultimatum”

It matters in formats with teammates like Two-Headed Giant.

Keyword Proposal for Card Control

New 20 Feb 2022 Asked by doctorstarky 53 Comments

Do you think it would be worth it to keyword "controlled by an opponent" and "controlled by you" as "enemy" and "friendly" respectively? It would look really clean for a fight spell to say "Target friendly creature fights target enemy creature."

In a two-headed giant game, can I target my partner as “friendly”?

Two-Headed Giant Confusion

New 21 Sep 2021 Asked by thetabbybadger 26 Comments

Hello Mr. Rosewater! I had a lot of fun at the Midnight Hunt prerelease and even got to play werewolves! If I can offer one piece of constructive criticism, Day/Night was a little confusing in two-headed giant and there was no official rulings to fall back on. Nobody could quite agree if one person per team casting no spells was enough to turn Day to Night or if both had to cast no spells for the change to happen. We found a ruling by Tabak on twitter but some people didn’t know who he was and didn’t think it was very official. In the future for mechanics that trigger off of player actions like that, can there be official rulings posted by Wizards for two-headed giant specifically? Thanks!

When original Innistrad came out there were rules created for how the “werewolf mechanic” worked with Two-Headed Giant, and those were the rules Tabak was referring to. I agree we could have republished them.

Preference Between Game Formats

New 03 May 2021 Asked by stormtide-leviathan 49 Comments

I assume since it's not really any politics, you prefer two-headed giant to true multiplayer formats like commander. But how does THG compare to 1v1?

I prefer 1v1 to Two-Headed Giant, but THG is my favorite multiplayer format.

Enjoying Strixhaven Limited

New 18 Apr 2021 Asked by thricelocked 35 Comments

I just won a two-headed giant game by doubling my ally's Bird Professor's power three times with Exponential Growth. What I'm trying to say is, Strixhaven Limited is pretty fun, and I hope you're proud of what you've done (because you should be)

I am. : )
