Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded

Wrenn and Six Creation

In your "Twenty Years, Twenty Lessons" talk, you said that Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded, was a mistake, as the design was primarily focused on designing a two-mana planeswalker. What changed in your approach that allowed Wrenn and Six to happen?

We didn’t start with the goal of making a two-mana planeswalker. We started with bringing a Dryad and her Treefolk to life. Also, a two-color card has more room to play with a two-drop than a monocolored card.

Which card was more poorly received: Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded or Nissa Revane?

Tibalt. Nissa actually saw a little tournament play.

Tibalt Popularity Fact

It's me and my brother's birthday! :) Do you think we could get some trivia about Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded? Our first cards were his dual deck and we fought over who got to play Tibalt every time :p

Tibalt probably has the highest delta between his popularity and the power of his planeswalker card. Happy Birthday to you and your brother!

Doubling Season Interactions

For the record: Ajani Vengeant; Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver; Domri Rade; Gideon, Champion of Justice; Jace Beleren; Jace, the Mind Sculptor; Karn Liberated; Nissa Revane; Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded & Venser, the Sojourner can't ultimate immediately with Doubling Season out. Unless you have more than one :)

FYI.

Tibalt's Origin

I know you're not super involved with crafting the minutiae of flavor these days, Maro, but with the demise of Savor the Flavor and no more novels on the horizon, I don't really know whom else to ask. Is Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded, supposed to be a devil or a demon from Innistrad? If so, what's his deal? Will we ever learn anything about him?

Tibalt is from Innistrad and is half-human, half-devil. I believe his origin story is on the Avacyn Restored minisite.

What do you think about a lot of people hating on Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded on forums? I like him, but I feel that other people might not understand him or how he could be useful.

I think a lot of people don’t understand the restrictions that come with making a two-drop planeswalker.
