Threaten

Understanding of 'Threaten' Effects

New 03 Jul 2024 Asked by nothingbutland-blog 16 Comments

Blues mind control power suite mist be a total anathema to Red core beliefs of listening to that inner voice(all of a sudden its that Blue mage ordering you about) which always made Threaten effects odd to me as part of its color pie; those would seem more in line with Black mind control (since Nlack would threaten, conjole and blackmail but thats a different topic all together). What was the impetus to put Threaten effects in Red was it part of the old I can use my enemys effects against them(i.e. Red Elemental Blast) or purely a playbalence thing of as a way to deal with big creatures?

Threaten is merely red using its magic to make others as impulsive as itself. Threaten is less it gaining control of their mind and more putting implusive thoughts in their head that get them to act a certain way.

Threaten Effect Distribution

Do any colors other than red get threaten effects? If not, which other color would they fit best in?

Technically blue can get them as the color primary in stealing. Black is tertiary, so maybe it could get one. Red is king of temporary stealing.

Would a threaten effect that lasts 2 turns instead of 1 still be red? Or is that drifting blue/red?

It’s worth discussing.

Threaten Effects Rarity

"We try to make most common monocolor cards viable in at least two archetypes." - Is this part of why Threaten effects have stopped showing up at common in recent sets?

That’s more an adjustment of as-fan.

No, red can’t animate artifacts. A blue/red card could do that.

Exploration of Reverse-Threaten Concept

New 01 Oct 2021 Asked by ultwarrior 37 Comments

Red can give away control of its permanents (Harmless Offering) and can do temporary stealing (Threaten etc). Would temporarily giving away its permanents like a reverse-Threaten be within colour pie for red too? It's probably mostly relevant for multiplayer ("Here, have a blocker") but I'm sure it would be an interesting Johnny/Jenny idea too.

It’s something that could be explored.

Can Red Threaten enchantments?

No. Red can make it painful for you to keep the enchantment around, but it can’t outright destroy or steal it.

Primary Effect Mechanics

Besides countering, discard, and extra combats are there any mechanics where a color is primary in an effect by a large amount

Of the top of my head, extra turns, reanimation, bouncing, team boosting, damage doubling, damage prevention, threaten effects, land fetching, drawing cards for life, and drain effects.
