The Scorpion God

Killing Indestructible Gods Dilemma

New 21 Mar 2022 Asked by dude1818 60 Comments

In your Drive to Work on gods, you mention that it was a mistake to give the Amonkhet gods indestructible, since they get killed in Hour of Devastation. Except they're killed by the Scorpion God, who has an activated ability that puts -1/-1 counters on creatures, and -1/-1 counters get around indestructible :)

It’s more of a larger feel issue than a “can it mechanically work” issue.

I assume one day. The Scorpion God was legendary.

Color Pie Mechanics

New 20 Feb 2018 Asked by cicadashelling 49 Comments

So I kinda felt like the -1/-1 mechanic for The Scorpion god was kinda outside the color pie, flavor wise it made sense: a venomous Scorpio giving -1/-1 counters. But -1/-1 counters don't seem that red? Is there going to be more support for red/black -1/-1 producers?

Red has done plenty with -1/-1 counters.

Amonkhet Color Synergies

New 20 Jul 2017 Asked by rashandtaxes 61 Comments

Can you explain why Amonkhet's -1/-1 synergies were mostly Green and Black while The Scorpions God is Red and Black?

The Scorpion God was flavorfully about killing which falls more into black and red’s camp. -1/-1 counters were used because he was suppose to be killing indestructible Gods.

Enforcing Exact Names

New 25 Jun 2017 Asked by lasombra 48 Comments

Hey Maro, quick un-rules question: With Ach Hans Run and the new HOU gods, do we have to say "Ach Hans Run it's the The Scorpion God" or does the spirit of the rule allow us to omit one of the "The"s?

🐑 must 🗣 “The”. 🐑 have to use the 🕳 name and “The” counts.

Story vs Rules Consistency

New 22 Jun 2017 Asked by gonzoron 59 Comments

When a story beat involves one legendary creature killing another, do you always make sure it could happen rules wise? I really like that the scorpion god's -1/-1 counter ability could get around Rhonas's indestructibilty.

We do think about it.

Scorpion God Flavor

New 20 Jun 2017 Asked by markusleben 162 Comments

Just for a contrasting opinion, I like the fact that The Scorpion God doesn't have indestructible. The lack of indestructible underscores just how much Nicol Bolas undermined their godliness, and the zombie-style return ability shows how they're almost the dead shells of gods. For me, this is 100% a flavor home run.

Go flavor. : )

Scorpion God Feedback

New 19 Jun 2017 Asked by theycallmejokke 84 Comments

Hey Mark, while the The Scorpion God do indeed seems like a fun mechanical creature, it having zero of the trappings of previous gods (Theros, or Amonkhet) indestructibility, nor a prerequisite for being a creature makes it feel meh for me personally. Now it's just a big crature that have had the god creature type slapped on to it, which I find sad.

Think hard to kill rather than the narrower Indestructible.

Scorpion God Decision

New 19 Jun 2017 Asked by whitestarrussian 49 Comments

So why was indestructible replaced with the return to your hand on the next end step for "The Scorpion God"? Was the card viewed as to strong with indestructible?

Too much Indestructible causes development issues.

Praise for Elegant Design

New 18 Jun 2017 Asked by simplyuncontainable-blog 67 Comments

Hi Mark! I love cards with elegant card design that evoke complex emotions. Even without the story for context, I think everything about The Scorpion God stirs feelings of unease and twistedness. The name is strange and devoid of identity. The card-draw ability feels like you're learning dark secrets through Amonkhet's suffering. The recursion ability gives it a sense of creeping eventuality instead of permanence. Please send my high-fives to the people who designed and developed this monster :)

Will do.

Scorpion God Lore

I thought the Scorpion God didn't have a name because Bolas erased it from history and everyone's minds.

Quite possibly true.

Naming Monstrous Entities

New 17 Jun 2017 Asked by abelzumi 200 Comments

With "The Scorpion God," "The Gitrog Monster," and previous cards like "The Unspeakable" and "The Mimeoplasm," will we see a trend going forwards of cards that use this naming convention for an alien or monstrous purpose?

The Yes.

Scorpion God Traits

New 17 Jun 2017 Asked by bassimelwakil 39 Comments

How come the scorpion God doesn't have a "can't attack or block" clause? Kinda disappointed it's just a big creature. Doesn't feel like a god.

As you will see in the story, the three new Hour of Devastation gods are a bit different.

Scorpion God Name Choice

MaRo what's the reason for not giving the scorpion god an actual name?

It makes the character seem less personable and more alien.

Scorpion God Color Fit

New 17 Jun 2017 Asked by ukon-vasara 32 Comments

the Scorpion God seems more green than red to me. Could it have been printed as a BG creature? or is the paying mana to place -1/-1 counters too close to 'direct damage' for green to have?

We only let colors use -1/-1 counters where they can use damage or -N/-N. that means green could use it on artifact creatures or flying creatures.

Gods' Indestructibility

New 17 Jun 2017 Asked by bobthesupmonkey-blog 62 Comments

I first want to say i absolutely love the scorpion god but it bothers me it doesnt have indestructible it instead recurs which i can understand for lore reasons but i thought one of the defining traits of a god was being indestructible

Gods are hard to kill, but they don’t have to be indestructible. It’s too restrictive designwise.
