The Big Idea FAQ

New 12 May 2024 Asked by magicalgirlpenny 17 Comments

hi mark! i have an un-rules question for a deck i'm brewing: the faq for The Big Idea says the extra dice it rolls are seen as separate from the original, but what about the results? say i use it to get +1d6 to a roll and i roll a 4 and a 6, for cards like Mr House, would that count as two results, or one result of 10? thanks!

One result. It’s adapting the roll, not increasing the number of rolls.

Card Color Identity

New 02 Sep 2023 Asked by gabrielpadilha 44 Comments

Hi Mark! "The Big Idea" is my second favorite card in all MTG. I know, quite unnusual. But I have a really hard time building a deck around it, for the simple fact it lacks blue - and most "roll a 6-sided die" matters cards are in U. Is there a reason why this card color identity is Rakdos and not Grixis or Izzet? Thank you!

It wasn’t designed to be a Commander, just a fun legendary creature.

Acorn Stamp Rules Query

New 08 Dec 2022 Asked by quantext 17 Comments

Silver border/acorn stamp rules question. If I had 6 braniacs and The Big Idea out, could I tap the 6 braniacs and then use The Big Idea's tap ability to roll three dice?

You essentially would roll four dice and pick one as each die roll splits into another die roll.

UN Cards and Planar Dice Interaction

New 26 Jan 2022 Asked by archangelalchemist 32 Comments

My playgroup loves Planechase and weird decks. I was looking at Pippa, Duchess of Dice from the UN-sets but does The Big Idea or any other UN card interact with the planar die?

If a card just cares about a die being rolled, it will care about the planar die. If it specifically calls out what kind of die, it does not. And “six-sided die” refers to a normal die and not a Planar die even though it does have six sides.

The Big Idea Intentionality

New 12 Oct 2021 Asked by finneyflame-deactivated20221118 30 Comments

Is it intentional that The Big Idea from Unstable doesn't affect cards like the d20 rolling cards in AFR?

Yes. Unstable has a twenty-sided die rolling card (Sword of Dungeon & Dragons).

Game Triumph

Just the other day I killed an opponent with a Sly Spy F and The Big Idea. I tapped 24 brainiacs to get 8 extra dice and I even had squirrel powered villainy out.

Good job. : )

Brainiac Tokens Watermark

New 01 Dec 2018 Asked by mgmegadog 16 Comments

If you have Brainiac tokens created by The Big Idea on the board, represented by the Brainiac token cards that come in Unstable packs, do they have a League of Dastardly Doom watermark or not? (TBI has one, but the token cards themselves have no text box and thus no printed watermark...)

If a card doesn’t literally have a watermark, it doesn’t have a watermark for Un-purposes.

Six-Sided Die Rules

New 21 Dec 2017 Asked by grumpycathappychap-blog 46 Comments

I've noticed that silver-boarded cards say "roll a six-sided die". I have a wacky 6 sided die I made with the number ranges from 1000-6000. Currently there is nothing to stop me from using this die, which is pretty nice with something like "The Big Idea". I'm guessing a new rule about specifically what "die" can be used?

A six-sided die is defined in the FAQ. No shenanigans. : )
