Soulblade Djinn

Prowess Keyword Query

New 14 Jun 2016 Asked by mrfb 19 Comments

Why wasn't Prowess a keyword that signified a particular trigger a la Landfall, Raid, Morbid, etc.? For example, Soulblade Djinn has a Prowess-like effect that goes off whenever Prowess would. Or does this get into the difference between Italic keywords and nonitalic keywords?

I think you are confusing keywords (non italic) with ability words (italic).

Digital Triggers Explanation

Hopefully third time's the charm: I'm honestly not sure if this is a design or development question (sorry if it's dev!). Is there a reason that creatures like Strongarm Monk and Soulblade Djinn are printed with, "whenever you cast a noncreature spell, creatures you control get +1/+1." Rather than just, "creatures you control have prowess."? A creature can have multiple instances of prowess and each will trigger separately.

My best guess was it had to do with the interaction of how triggers work in digital products.

Mechanic Templating Reason

Is there a reason why Jeskai Ascendancy and Soulblade Djinn aren't templated as "Creatures you control gain prowess. (If a creature has multiple instances of prowess, each triggers separately.)"? Was it for MTGO purposes to avoid having a crazy number of triggers happen at once sometimes?

I believe that is the reason but it is just a guess on my part.

Soulblade Djinn Discussion

So while Soulblade Djinn's prowess-esque trigger certainly seems blue, its effect feels very white to me. Couldn't it have been a monowhite card?

White cares less about noncreature spells than Blue.
