Shichifukujin Dragon

Shichifukujin Dragon Rarity

New 19 Mar 2024 Asked by yuleooze 34 Comments

Hi Mark, while looking up the Shichifukujin Dragon I did not see anywhere that it is on the reserve list. Could a functionally identical version be made? I'm assuming the intent of the cards function is not to die with the enters trigger on the stack :p

It is one of two Magic cards that only one exists in the world, so I do not expect it to get reprinted. I do know as the person that designed it, it was more about being cool to read than play.

Secret Lair Idea Input

New 04 Mar 2021 Asked by winterwarp 59 Comments

I would like to suggest a Secret Lair idea (that I know at least one person would want...). There are a lot of currently inaccessible cards like Shichifukujin Dragon, the Richard Garfield celebration cards, MicroProse cards, other digital exclusive cards, Heroes of the Realm cards, those "Drake Stone" pseudo-cards, Robot Chicken, and others. These could be printed in gold border to avoid adding them to any formats. What are your thoughts on this idea?

The vast majority of those cards were not designed to be actually played.

Are Shichifukujin Dragon and 1996 World Champion on the Reserve List?

They are not official cards but special one-of creations.

Dragon Card Fate

A friend of mine requested that I ask you what happened to Shichifukujin Dragon that was at the Tokyo DCI Tournament Center. He says it was moved the Hobby Japan Main Branch, but doesn't know if the card or the place is still there. Could you give us a status up date on it's whereabouts?

I do not know.

Favorite Dragon Cards

New 20 Sep 2015 Asked by henro88 53 Comments

It's my birthday, and I wanted some trivia - but I can't think of anything interesting to ask about. Could you tell us about your favorite dragon cards?

In the Guinness Book of World Records, two cards are listed as the rarest trading card game cards in the world. 1996 World Champion and Shichifukujin Dragon both have only one copy in existence. I had the honor of designing both cards. 1996 World Champion was given to Tom Chanpheng, the 1996 World Champion. It is embedded in his trophy. Shichifukujin Dragon was a card we made for our Japanese partner at the time to display in their main tournament center. Happy Birthday!

Shichifukujin Dragon Origin

What's the story behind Shichifukujin Dragon?

We had a Japanese partner at the time and they had a big tournament center in Tokyo. As a gesture of good will we made a on-of-a-kind card for them. It was a dragon because in Japanese culture a dragon can be a sign of good fortune. Extra trivia - I designed both the 1996 World Champion and the Dragon - the two rarest TCG cards according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Flying Traits Consistency

New 21 Sep 2013 Asked by vaultboyzk 26 Comments

"All dragons and angels fly." Elder Land Wurm, Henge Guardian, Shichifukujin Dragon, Zodiac Dragon, Sustaining Spirit seem to disagree. FYI

We will not make a modern dragon or angel that does not fly.

Legendary Creatures Collection

New 29 May 2013 Asked by variedgreyshades 13 Comments

Hey MaRo. Vorthos here. I'm working on a binder with 1 of every legendary creature in order of color and then release, oldest to newest. I'm at 251 cards so far. It really bums me out that I have an empty slot at the beginning of the WUBRG page where 1996 World Champion should go. I know this is silly. Do you have any advice on how to get over felling bummed about something so ridiculous?

The card was never released through any Magic product so I say it doesn;t officially count.  By the way, if you’re counting the 1996 World Champion, you also have to be sad about the Shichifukujin Dragon. I talk about it in this article: http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/mr163 EDIT: He only collects legendary creatures and the dragon isn’t legendary. My bad. The article’s still a lot of fun.

Gatherer Inclusions

New 14 Dec 2012 Asked by yatesc 2 Comments

If you can get the holiday cards into Gatherer, could you also see about getting 1996 World Champion, Shichifukujin Dragon, Proposal, Splendid Genesis, Fraternal Exaltation, and Robot Chicken put in?

The first two possibly as they are Magic cards done in the context of Magic business. The next three are definitely a no as they were private things done by Richard Garfield (to propose and celebrate the birth of his two kids). The last was something we did as a thank you for some help we got from the Robot Chicken people. That wouldn’t be in Gatherer but possibly could be a Magic Arcana.

Mental Magic Legality

Are Shichifukujin Dragon, 1996 World Champion, Splendid Genesis, and Fraternal Exaltation legal in Mental Magic?

Depends on your house rules, but generally no. For example, you cannot use them with Richard Garfield, Ph.D. (from Unhinged - it lets you basically play Mental Magic).

Unique Cards Origin

New 17 Apr 2012 Asked by formiko 0 Comments

Why were Shichifukujin Dragon and Robot Chicken (the card) made?

The first was for an opening of a game center in Japan. The second was a present to the writers on Robot Chicken who helped out at a Pro Tour.
