Dragon Colors and Flavor Text

New 02 Jul 2021 Asked by hugetractsoffetchland 34 Comments

Although their "breath weapon" abilities are certainly in the color pie, the flavor text on Green Dragon, Black Dragon, and Red Dragon seems more suited to black, red, and white respectively. Is this a kind of bend? Do you know whether the designers considered having the cards' colors not necessarily match the colors of the scales?

It was talked about early and the decision was reached to match their physical color.

Off-Color Abilities

New 28 Jan 2018 Asked by make-mrd-pure-again 32 Comments

Hello Mark! Do off-color activated abilities have to be in-color for the ability, or can they be in-color for the card. For example, could a Red Dragon with Blue Firebreathing exist? Or is that unintuitive?

Off-color abilities match the color pie of the color being used in the activation.

Mono-Red Dragons Query

New 18 Aug 2017 Asked by zillasmasher 53 Comments

Mr Rosewater, as a huge fan of anything and everything Mono-Red Dragons I have to ask, will we be getting at least one Mono-Red Dragon in Dominaria? Maybe a reference to Shivan Dragon or something similar, like a modernized/upgraded version of the original dragon?

It is red’s iconic creature…

D&D Dragons Correction

New 14 Feb 2017 Asked by apocalypticvalraven 33 Comments

"Yes, Dungeons and Dragons debuted with exactly five dragons, one matching each color of magic. Four of their five habitats also match the Magic basic lands, only white dragons (whose habitat is arctic) don't." Not exactly- OD&D debuted with the Black dragon (swamps), Blue dragon (deserts), Green dragon (Forests), Red dragon (volcanoes), and White dragon (Arctic), as well as the Golden dragon which had no particular favored location. So, six dragons, two of which do not match MtG's lands.

Dragon Colors Diversity

Hi Mark, love this game and dragons. But every set that doesn't have a dragon, we only get a mono-red dragon. Can we see some other mono color (black/white?) or even multicolor ones (R/W, R/B, R/G) instead?

Dragons are Red’s iconic creature so they’re mostly going to show up in monored. Some multicolor ones, with Red, can show up on rarer occasions.

Favorite Dragon

Hey, Mark! My birthday was on the 3rd, I think you might have missed my question 'cause you were at the camp! I hope it was fun! :D I'd asked for some trivia on your favorite, not-mono-red dragon creature, whatever (or whoever) it may be.

When Legends came out, my favorite elder dragon was not Nicol Bolas but Chromium. Happy Birthday!

Popularity of Dragons

Do dragons test well? It seems like every set has to have a big red dragon, but neither I nor my peers (who run the psychographic gamut) are ever all that into them.

Yes, dragons test very well.
