Rakdos Cackler

Color Design Challenge

Point of order: every colour has had at least one 2 power one drop. The blue one was Phantasmal Bear (dies when targeted). So it should be possible, at least in theory, to complete the Rakdos Cackler / Dryad Militant "cycle" - you would just need to make four bluebrid ones have drawbacks. (And having ten such creatures extant would be good for cube building options)

Monocolors having clean one-drop 2-power designs (and I would argue not every color has great designs in this space) and those things all existing in hybrid space is not the same thing.

Guilds and Four-Color Cards

Re: 4-color design (Nephilim). Could a blend of two Ravnica guilds be conceived us as four-color design? Like a WUBR "Odd Couple" (think Tibor and Lumia) that represents a team of an Azorius arbiter and a Rakdos cackler?

Two guilds banding together is the best idea I’ve come up with to make a flavorful four-color card.

Standard Guild Mechanics

Standard relevant guild mechanic cards: Ghor Clan Rampager (bloodrush), Firefist Striker, Frontline Medic (battalion), Rakdos Cackler (unleash), Varolz the Scar Striped (gives scavenge), Mizzium Mortars, Cyclonic Rift (Overload), Rootborn Defenses, Trostani, Selesnya's Voice (populate), Blind Obedience (extort, borderline). Evolve, Cipher and Detain have not produced standard-quality cards.

Experiment One (with evolve) has seen Standard play.

New Mechanics Critique

New 05 Jun 2013 Asked by junkstory-blog-blog 21 Comments

It seems like the vast majority of new mechanics lately see little to no competitive play. I am a spike and I've never seen a cipher, battalion, extort, evolve, or detain card at a tournament table. I only see the remaining RTR block mechanics on one or two cards for select deck archetypes (Rakdos Cackler; Rootborn Defenses; Mizzium Mortars). I understand new mechanics are balanced for limited play, but it feels like some also become ignored for tournament play. What's your take on this?

I believe many of those mechanics are showing up in Standard. Examples, Question Marks…

Unleash Mechanic Thoughts

New 30 Mar 2013 Asked by bitterlips 14 Comments

How do you feel about how Unleash turned out? I think it's a solidly designed mechanic, fits the colors, but I feel it's a little boring and I wish it worked better with Hellbent (as Scavenge/Dredge, as Evolve/Graft work together). Chaos Imps and arguably Rakdos Cackler are the only cards that change dramatically with use of the mechanic. Can we expect more like that in the future, or is Unleash over and done?

If only there was a set coming out soon that used the guild mechanics of Return to Ravnica.

Cute Card Appreciation

My girlfriend thinks Rakdos Cackler is the cutest magic card ever, so I want to thank you for that, and pass the thanks to the artist too :)

Will do.  Interesting choice. : )
