Prismatic Ward

Multicolor Card Frames

New 08 Apr 2024 Asked by aalgot 52 Comments

Why do multi color cards have gold frames instead of prismatic wardrobe style frames that are all their colors?

Legends chose to make them gold frames, I assume because it was early days and it simplified things. I, along with others, pitched we change two-color cards to frames with two colors (three plus would still be gold, as they looked ugly when you got too many colors). We even had them designed. The popularity and inertia of gold frames kept it from happening. Then when we made hybrid, I suggested we use the frames we’d made for the two-color frames, and it was accepted.

White Mana Symbol Discrepancy

Hello Mark, regarding your white mana symbol question: Prismatic Ward (and Fylgja, the other white promo from Ice Age) were printed in the set with the old symbol. There's an Ask Wizards from January 2007 from Kelly Digges that I linked in the earlier post; as he put it, "having all printed copies of a given card match was viewed as more important than consistency within the set." For years the only online images available were later mockups with the new symbol though!

Trivia on White Mana

Hi Mark, Do you have any trivia for the previous White mana symbol?

It’s the only mana symbol to have a major redesign. The “new” one premiered in Ice Age. There was a white promo card, Prismatic Ward, the came out before the set that has the old white mana symbol, while the one in the set has the new one.

It's my birthday today! I was wondering if there's a piece of Magic trivia that you find utterly fascinating or interesting, but you've never shared in fear that everyone else would find it boring? Now's your big chance!

There exists two Ice Cards with the original white mana symbol: Fylgja and Prismatic Ward both had promo versions that didn’t use the updated white mana symbol introduced in Ice Age.Happy Birthday!
