Pippa, Duchess of Dice

UN Cards and Planar Dice Interaction

New 26 Jan 2022 Asked by archangelalchemist 32 Comments

My playgroup loves Planechase and weird decks. I was looking at Pippa, Duchess of Dice from the UN-sets but does The Big Idea or any other UN card interact with the planar die?

If a card just cares about a die being rolled, it will care about the planar die. If it specifically calls out what kind of die, it does not. And “six-sided die” refers to a normal die and not a Planar die even though it does have six sides.

Would you call Pippa, Duchess of Dice eternal or acorn if it were made today? If acorn, what aspect specifically pushes it there?

I don’t think dice tokens can be eternal.

Proliferating Dice Token Issue

New 08 Nov 2021 Asked by earlnimbud 24 Comments

Hey Mark! Un-rules question: If I roll a dice to make a token with Pippa, Duchess of Dice and then proliferate, can I proliferate the dice used to make her tokens? (since commonly players use dice to represent counters, though I do recognize that *technically* these aren't counters at all; just thought I'd check)

The dice are creature tokens and proliferate only works on counters. You can populate a die creature token though.

Rules for Pippa's Reroll

New 26 Jul 2021 Asked by theblocknessmonster 36 Comments

For Pippa, Duchess of Dice, I assume her reminder text is to allow you to interrupt the resolution of other effects that have you roll a die, but just so I'm aware, what times wouldn't it make sense to tap her? (and, more importantly, should I explain what she's doing so that the ability makes sense when I activate it, like "Pippa demands a reroll"?)

Retooling dice is a little tricky in the rules because normally you can’t respond mid-resolution. The basic essence is she let’s you reroll a die just after it’s been rolled, but before the result is used.

Dice Wordings for Reprints

New 25 Jul 2021 Asked by haru-n-harkel 22 Comments

hey Mark, with AFR using the "D#" wording for dice, if former die-rolling cards were reprinted (like Pippa, Duchess of Dice), would they use the D#, or "#-sided die" format?

“D#” is just for D&D. The “#-sided die” is the default Magic template.

Can you use Pippa, duchess of dice to re-roll dice that are in the stack of a Boomstacker, thereby causing it to be sacrificed?

No. You can only reroll dice that have been rolled.

Regarding Vigilance of Dice Tokens

New 03 Mar 2020 Asked by greenmyojin 47 Comments

Regarding Pippa, Duchess of Dice: was there any consideration to give vigilance to six-sided-die tokens? I think cube tokens are unclear whether it's tapped.

In R&D, we use djce to represent creature tokens all the time, so it wasn’t an issue that came up in playtesting, but yes, I’ve gotten that note from numerous people.

Pippa's Control Over Dice

New 26 Feb 2020 Asked by compsognathusspokezarathust-blog 27 Comments

If my opponent controls Pippa, Duchess of Dice, and we're using dice to keep track of our life totals, can Pippa change either one of our life totals?

No. She can only affect dice/die rolls that are generated by spells & effects in the game.
