Color Matters Hurdles

New 25 Jul 2023 Asked by faerross 29 Comments

"Cards can generate tokens of other colors"

So a color's pie includes other colors? It feels like at least a bend. While it's not an inherent weakness unique to any one color, creating tokens of another color in place of, instead of in addition to the color of the card creating it does bypass elements of 'color matters' cards.

Example: A green card making non-green tokens makes green stronger against cards like Out of the Way (with its cost reduction targeting green permanents).

Is the goal of Design to simply cost any 'color matters' cards at lower power levels? Or is this considered a non-issue from the outset?

It’s technically a bend, but a light one. We do it infrequently enough, that’s it’s not thought of as a big deal.

Eldrazi Planeswalker Idea

New 10 Feb 2019 Asked by yandere-sliver 54 Comments

I think the question regarding an Eldrazi Planeswalker would be to have an Eldrazi which functions mechanically as a Planeswalker card. I mean you could pick Emeria as an Avatar of Emrakul and you would also get the often requested Angel Planeswalker out of the way.

While I get the “it would be fun to have a Eldrazi planeswalker card” excitement, it flies so much in the face of flavor, I don’t believe we would do it. Just as they’re are hard mechanical limits, there also are some hard flavor limits.

Red Bounce Consideration

New 22 Jul 2018 Asked by angelofflamingcats 34 Comments

Dear Mark, "Bounce", the returning of creatures to their owners hand, seems like an incredibly red ability to me, especially as a sorcery or as an etb, so we don't get to be trickery like blue. "Right now, I want this blocker gone! I don't care if he replays it later!" You've stated before that this has been talked about, but could you go into a bit more detail? Thanks! ^^

It turns out bounce is a little too synergistic with red’s aggro “win quickly” strategy. Large creatures that are hard to bolt out of the way are supposed to help stop red, so giving red an efficient tool to deal with them has developmental concerns.

Commander Product Timing

Now that M19 is out of the way, can we already talk about this years new Commander product? Or am I still too early?

I wrote my Commander article next week which means previews are about a month away.

Unfinished Cycle Concerns

New 05 Jan 2018 Asked by greatdinn 43 Comments

Since we're only one day away from the full spoiler, I'll just get this out of the way now. Really hope there wasn't another unfinished accidental cycle. I get the feeling people are going to be disappointed if there isn't another multicolored legendary pirate, when merfolk, vampire, and dinosaurs got one.

Accidental cycles are almost always unfinished in that they weren’t planned to be cycles.

Drive to Work Advice

New 12 Jun 2016 Asked by red--mask 16 Comments

Is there a good recent jumping on point for Drive to Work? As someone who wants to design, I've read a few here and there but I'd like to do more.

If you’re interesting in reading about game design, you want my column “Making Magic”. “Drive to Work” is my podcast. With that out of the way, what “Making Magic” columns and “Drive to Work” podcasts would you all suggest a new person start with?

Maro, through my Winamp, I've somehow managed to get your next Drive to Works on Champions of Kamigawa Part II and III. Are you in the future?

I live in the future. I actually had them posted a little early as I have a crazy day tomorrow and I wanted to get them out of the way tonight.

Hitting Bus Scenario

New 16 Dec 2012 Asked by kingofincoherency 22 Comments

Everyone asks "What if a bus hit you?" so I figure I should get this out of the way. What if you hit a bus?

Out of anger?  I try not to do that.

Color Subliminal Messages

New 13 Aug 2012 Asked by kingofincoherency 12 Comments

(Please Respond to this. I’ve asked questions Numerous Times but have not gotten Many Of your Responses) Ever questioned which color is better at abusing subliminal messages? Black seems all about Everything Evil, though Blue Loves Everything Sneaky.

Black is the obvious first choice that Everyone would look to. Everyone that is except lovers of Blue. Leave it to blue to find ways to be tricky, Especially on a mental level. So, with that answer out of the way, i have to go do some designs that have just popped into my head.

Avacyn's Spoiler Strategy

New 24 Dec 2011 Asked by dukkhasatva 3 Comments

Why were you allowed to say Avacyn Restored has no DFCs? A lot of people see this as a repeat of "no allies in Rise of the Eldrazi" which you named as a mistake too in one of your State of Design articles. You always talk about how spoiling a new set is a delicate process, as each piece of information is judged in isolation. Isn't saying AR has no DFCs at this point a mistake?

The reason I told you now is that I want the teaser season for Avacyn Restored to be about what is in the set rather than what is not in the set. So I told everyone early to get it out of the way.

Silver-Bordered Rule

New 25 Sep 2011 Asked by oneiromantis 5 Comments

I was checking the Gatherer comments on Ass Whuppin' and I saw this: "This might be a silly question, but can you use cards like Alter Reality to change silver to say... black?". That was a very intersted question. Can you?

There is one meta silver-bordered rule. It can never interact with the black-bordered world. Think of them as parallel universes with something called the void in between. (Okay, geeky “Doctor Who” reference out of the way.)
