Otaria Set Potential

Otaria had 2 whole blocks, would it warrant a new set?

By itself? Unlikely.

Otaria's Identity

New 27 Apr 2023 Asked by jackakim1 36 Comments

What identity would you say Otaria has? Is it a graveyard identity due to Odyssey block or a tribal identity due to Onslaught block?

When we go to Dominaria these days, we’re more focused on Dominaria as a whole world (the history theme) more so than the mechanical elements of pieces of it, so I don’t think it practically matters what Otaria is associated with.

If/When: a set based in Otaria

Little when playing a role in a Dominaria return. Little if of being centered there.

Comparing Ikoria to Otaria

New 08 Apr 2020 Asked by gophilipbowles 40 Comments

Having now read the book and read the worldbuilding article, Ikoria seems to have little to do with Godzilla-type tropes but at least to me it strongly resembles Otaria - not only is it full of giant mutating tribal monsters, there's some unnatural involvement from a legendary artifact, which immediately made me think of the Mirari. Do you know whether reinterpreting a less popular area of Dominaria as its own plane was deliberate?

While there are a few light similarities, they’re pretty different.

Dominaria's Scope

New 23 Apr 2018 Asked by gophilipbowles 89 Comments

I feel that your argument that "Dominaria is too broad" is circular: you're basing it on a perceived need to treat the entire plane as an aggregate entity, which wouldn't exist if themed sets were mostly focused on continents rather than new worlds: say Otaria for graveyard, Sarpadia for tribal, Terisiare for multicolour. Treating things that could be part of the same setting as separate worlds seems not to come with any real advantages, but it comes at the cost of continuity and fan service.

Why have a game where planeswalkers can walk between worlds and have all the differences be on continents of the same world? Magic spent ten years making this mistake. It’s a bug, not a feature.

Dominaria vs Lorwyn

New 12 Mar 2017 Asked by the-mr-kaleb 35 Comments

Wait I asked Return to dominaria or Return to lorwyn, you said dominaria, but someone asked Lorwyn or Otaria and you said lorwyn. But Otaria is on dominaria... correct?

If we return to Dominaria, I don’t think Otaria is high on the list of places to return to.

I believe the inhabitants of Otaria.

Consecutive Blocks

New 24 Jun 2016 Asked by griefermadness 29 Comments

Do you think we'll ever see two consecutive blocks taking place in the same setting again but with different mechanical themes (like onslaught/odyssey on otaria)?

If the story calls for it, it’s a possibility.

Sarkhan's Timeline Adventures

New 07 Jun 2016 Asked by kyosuae 44 Comments

Could Sarkhan, now being a time traveling planeswalker, go back and undo the mending on Otaria, thus giving planeswalkers back their virtual immortality? Would he even know of the mending? Do any walkers but Lili, Bolas, and Ugin?

Sarkhan’s ability to time travel was a one-time thing.

Otaria's Identity

New 07 Jun 2015 Asked by collex1 38 Comments

While we are on the subject of Dominaria - why wasn't Otaria made its own plane? It had its own identity - it was barbarian fantasy world, à la Conan the Barbarian. Why was it stuck on Dominaria?

Why wasn’t Ice Age its own plane? Why wasn’t Mirage? Early Magic missed a lot on what planeswalking was.

Dominaria Locations

New 29 Apr 2015 Asked by dnearn 115 Comments

Dominaria is a big place. When people say they want to return there, *where* do they want to return to? Otaria? Aerona? Someplace else? Personally I would like to see more of Caliman and Jamuraa.

A fine question. If we return to Doninaria, what parts/things would you want to see?

Sequential Blocks Possibility

New 09 Aug 2013 Asked by dacke 13 Comments

What are the chances of two blocks back-to-back on the same plane, letting you develop that plane to a greater degree? Sort of like Odyssey and Onslaught (though Otaria wasn't a plane, it was just a different part of Dominaria).

The reboot of worlds has become such a big part of Magic’s identity that I believe if we stayed on the same plane something pretty significant would have to happen for it to feel like the new block has a new environment to offer.
