Necrotic Ooze

Possibility of Necrotic Ooze Variant

Could we see a card similar to Necrotic Ooze but that cares about triggered abilities instead of activated abilities?

I’m not sure that works in the rules.

Pondering Do-It-Yourself Seraph's Capabilities

New 26 Dec 2021 Asked by tempus-vulpes 36 Comments

In regards to the Do-It-Yourself Seraph, while the "this creature has the text box of each card exiled with it." Might not necessarily be possible in black border, but "This creature has all abilities of cards exiled with it." Should be. For example,, Necrotic Ooze, and Mairsil the Pretender each gain the activated abilities of cards, and The Book of Vile Darkness Creates a Vecna token that gains triggered abilities. And more or less any clone gains all abilities of a single card.

It’s playing in space we might be able to do, but copying can get complicated when copying more than one thing.

Necrotic Ooze Watermark

New 16 Nov 2018 Asked by fantastigasmical 40 Comments

Wait, you said why necrotic ooze lacks a Phyrexian watermark but not why it has a Mirran one. Shouldn't it lack either watermark? Or was it a situation where every card needed one or the other?

With a few rare exceptions (like planeswalkers), every card had either a Phyrexian or a Mirran watermark. Anything that didn’t qualify as a Phyrexian was a Mirran.

Necrotic Ooze Inquiry

I understand this may be more a question for creative, but why does Necrotic Ooze have a Mirran watermark? Everything about the card screams Phyrexia to me. It's black, it interacts with dead things, it depicts a pile of rotten flesh, and it even has flavor text from Geth! This has seriously bugged me for years now.

We had six criteria that mechanically marked you as Phyrexian and the Ooze hit none of them.

Necrotic Ooze Origins

My birthday trivia question keeps getting buried even though it's not the 26th, can you still tell me something about my favorite card Necrotic Ooze?

I designed Necrotic Ooze but interesting not as an ooze. I originally made it a zombie flavored as one that stoke body parts off of dead bodies. As an Ooze fan, I was fine with the shift to Ooze. Happy Belated Birthday!

Favorite Tribes

What's your favorite tribe?(IE: Human, Zombie, Rat, Sliver, Phyrexian, etc)

Zombies and oozes.  I did make Necrotic Ooze but apparently it’s hard to be a zombie ooze.

Copying Abilities

New 17 May 2014 Asked by karric 17 Comments

So far cards that gain the abilities of another card (like Necrotic Ooze) only gain activated abilities. Is it problematic to gain static/triggered abilities?

Yes, that’s why we don’t do it.

Cards Like Cairn Wanderer

Can you print more cards like Cairn Wanderer or Necrotic Ooze?

Having made both those cards as it’s design space I enjoy, there’s a good chance I will make more like them.

Borrowed Abilities Issue

New 29 Nov 2012 Asked by kallixti 8 Comments

Several cards (such as Necrotic Ooze) can borrow activated abilities from other cards, but there aren't any which borrow triggered or static abilities. Is this is design decision, a rules limitation, or just something you haven't gotten around to doing yet?

It’s a rules issue.
