Errata Comparison: Phyrexian vs Legendary

New 08 Jan 2022 Asked by j-waffles 41 Comments

People have been talking about mechanical errata recently in regards to potentially changing rampage, and have been talking about the mass Errata that phyrexians got in regards to legends with that errata, so now seems like the perfect time to ask my question:You’ve said in the past that things like the mass errata to make things phyrexian is ok as functional errata because they were always phyrexian in flavor. That being the case, would legendary errata be acceptable for proper nouns from ABUR, Arabian Nights, and Antiquities, since they are from before “legendary” was even a thing? Aladdin, Ali from Cairo, King Suleiman, Bazaar of Baghdad, and Library of Alexandria are all proper nouns. 4 of those 5 reference people/places from the real world, which we know from the portal sets do constitute the “legendary” super type. You could argue that Bazaar and Library see to much play in extended formats to get such major functional errata, but the “phyrexian” errata to glistener elf and blighted agent turned infect from a fringe deck to basically unplayable in modern. I know you guys avoid mechanical errata if ever possible because it confuses new players, but I’d be willing to bet new players would be more confused hearing “Aladdin is not considered a proper noun. Nor is Baghdad” than they would be hearing “that card from 25+ years ago has been changed” especially considering many other old cards from around that time have had serious errata to their printed text that changes some of them SEVERELY. I guess my question is just: why is the mass errata of phyrexian acceptable, when it is changing things that were always phyrexians in flavor to be so mechanically, but an errata of proper nouns to be legendary from ABUR, Arabian nights, and antiquities not acceptable, when it would be changing things that were always proper nouns in flavor to be so mechanically?

Making a creature Phyrexian does impact how other cards interact with it, but it doesn’t change how the card functions in a vacuum. Adding legendary to a card does, and pretty severely in any 4-of format.

Trivia on Thopeters

Hi Mark, It's my birthday today and I wanted to ask some trivia on thopeters, if you have some. Also, these 6 next premier sets got me soooooo hyped, wizards did a really good job !

I’ll share one of R&D’s favorite stories. Richard Garfield is meeting with the head of a company that we were considering licensing from to make a trading card game. The person asks who would be working on it? Richard answers the same R&D team that works on the rest of our products including Magic. The person then wants assurances that we don’t make any broken cards like the one Magic made. Richard is curious what card he considers the “broken card”. Black Lotus? No. Another of the Power Nine? No. Library of Alexandria? No. Mishra’s Workshop? No. What card was he referring to? Ornithopter! The danger of Ornithopter became a running joke in R&D for years. Happy Birthday!

Animate Library Errata

New 13 Apr 2019 Asked by marqueskot 32 Comments

Mark, Can I request an Errata to the oracle text for animate library? I feel like you should be able to cast it on both your library or any noncreature permanent in play that has the name library in it. It would then, of course, become a 1/1. Animating my library of Alexandria should be a thing that needs to be allowed!

The intent is it animates Magic libraries not real world libraries.

If you do a top-down Egyptian theme, can we get a reprint of Library of Alexandria?

No, it’s on the Reserved List.

Librarians in Magic

New 11 Feb 2014 Asked by midnitelibrary 44 Comments

So there are a number of library cards in Magic (Library of Lat-Nam, Library of Alexandria, etc.), but the only two librarians are an orc and a horror (not exactly who I'd want in charge of a library). What's the deal? As a librarian who plays Magic I'd love for their to be more librarians in future sets!

You’re forgetting Phyrexian Librarian from Unhinged. : )

Library of Alexandria Status

Why isn't Library of Alexandria considered one of the Power cards?

It is. Why isn’t it one if the “Power Nine”? Because the “Power Nine” were all in Alpha and Library of Alexandria was in Arabian Nights.

Is it possible to make 'fixed' balanced versions of bazaar of Baghdad or library of alexandria?

Just remember that Wasteland was my fixed version of Strip Mine.

Reserved List Confusion

New 02 Mar 2012 Asked by formiko 0 Comments

It's been said that only rare cards are on the reserved list. Then why are there uncommon cards on the list like Library of Alexandria and Diamond Valley?

Those cards are, in fact, rare. The confusion has to do with how they are labeled. Back then there were only two sheets of cards (unlike the three today - not counting land). Those two sheets were called the “common” and “uncommon” sheet. The way rares worked was that they only showed up once or twice on the uncommon sheet whereas the uncommons would show up three to six times. Thus, a U1 (a card appearing once on the uncommon sheet) is actually a rare card.
