Jalum Grifter

Physical Component of Jalum Grifter

New 24 Dec 2021 Asked by thasgar 32 Comments

Jalum Grifter has a physical component? How? Doesn't shuffling happen in every game?

You’re not shuffling. You’re playing Three Card Monte (aka “follow the queen”). It’s super physical.

Is Jalum Grifter acorn or eternal?

Cards with physical components require an acorn, so if it was in Unfinity it would have an acorn.

Re: legendary devils, there already is one! Admittedly silver border (jalum grifter), but it’s one of my favorite silver border cards.

Good point.

Jalum Grifter Mechanics

If one of the lands I grift with Jalum Grifter has counters on it, does it keep those counters while I shuffle and while the opponent chooses?

No, you take them off for the Three Card Monte and put them back on after.

Jalum Grifter Update

New 20 Dec 2017 Asked by simicmimic 23 Comments

The Jalum Grifter is a Devil now, huh?

Back in the day, Legend was a creature type and creatures only had one creature type. That means updating any Legendary creature from the early days requires giving them a creature type.

Jalum Grifter Origin

Do you remember why Jalum Grifter was made a legend? I didn't even realize there was a legendary creature aside from Timmy in the set before today.

Because it was a reference to a specific person - former R&D Brand Manager Joel Mick, the same person Jalum Tome (his initials are J.L.M.) was named after.

Un-commander Deck Thanks

I assembled a Jalum Grifter un-commander deck, and just got to play it tonight. I just want to say thank you; Yet Another Aether Vortex is a thing of beauty.

It’s my favorite Unhinged card.

Un-set Templating

New 18 Dec 2014 Asked by isomorphed 16 Comments

Why Lexivore and Jalum Grifter have "destroy target card in play" expression and not just simply "destroy target card"?

The Un-set’s, especially Unglued, did not get the templating attention that most sets get.

Cards Named After People

New 07 May 2012 Asked by pikeas 1 Comments

Excluding cards created for Invitational winners, have any cards other than Maro and Richard Garfield, PhD been based on real people?

Yes. Jayemdae Tome was named after James Michael Davis, former VP of R&D (the card is pronounced “J.M.D. Tome”). Jalum Tome and it’s parody card from Unhinged Jalum Grifter is named after Joel L. Mick, former Magic Brand Manager (“J.L.M. Tome”). Joel, by the way, was the model for the figure in the card Jalum Grifter. Emessi Tome is named after Michael Scott Elliott, former Magic designer (“M.S.E. Tome”) Mons’s Goblin Raiders and its parody card from Unhinged Mons’s Goblin Waiters are both named after Mons Johnson, Magic R&D playtester and longtime friend of Richard Garfield. Those are all the cards I can think of named after current or former R&D members. I apologize if I’m forgetting any one.
