Hot Soup Mechanics

New 22 Sep 2022 Asked by attracte 24 Comments

Hey Mark, if a creature is equipped with Hot Soup, does the creature count as a "hot source" for Don't Try This At Home?

Hot Soup counts as a hot source for the second ability of Don’t Try This at Home, but doesn’t deal damage so can’t be affected by the first ability.

Hot Soup as Food

New 25 Apr 2021 Asked by withwherewithal 32 Comments

I know functional errata's do not happen unless absolutely necessary, but what are your thoughts on making the card Hot Soup a Food?

The issue is Food needs to have ā€œ2, T sacrifice this: Gain 3 lifeā€.

Food Tokens Logic

New 18 Sep 2019 Asked by unicycleist 53 Comments

Did you consider having the "food" tokens not be artifacts? Why is an apple able to be enchanted by an "animate artifact" spell?

In game terminology, tangible items are artifacts which includes food. Iā€™ll invoke the Hot Soup precedent. : )And food coming to life seem like a cool magical spell.

It doesnā€™t have the sac for life ability.

Food Artifacts Logic

Why make Food artifact instead of enchantments? Enchanted food seems more Fairy Tale

Artifacts are tangible things while enchantmenrs are ephemeral. Also, the Hot Soup precedent. : )

Food Tokens vs Cards

New 05 Sep 2019 Asked by dalamusulom 73 Comments

""Mark "dont eat the delicious cards" Rosewater: so here's food tokens" It's ok. According to the Magic rules, tokens are not cards, so you're still safe." But there is at least one non-token food card that's been previewed, so you CAN eat a card.

Just because a card is Food doesnā€™t mean you can eat. Hot Soup was a card. You werenā€™t allowed to eat that.

Hot Soup Errata

New 04 Sep 2019 Asked by rabbiti3 41 Comments

You were talking about hot soup being an artifact. Will there be an errata to make hot soup an "artifact food - equipment"?

Thereā€™s a reason we canā€™t do that, but youā€™ll have to wait until you know what food tokens do to know why.

Logic Behind Food Artifacts

New 04 Sep 2019 Asked by armeizh 38 Comments

I assume it's too early to ask, but here goes nothing: what's the flavour behind making Food artifacts? Does it represent the whole packaging? Or is that simply the card type that lent itself the best to the job mechanically (like Clues)?

Man made things are artifacts. Hot Soup was an artifact. Note that there are sone natural things that can also be artifacts.

Card Imagery: Eating

Why don't we see people eating in cards often? They must get energy from food, right?

People do eat. Hot Soup clearly exists. : )

Trivia on Hot Soup

New 03 Apr 2019 Asked by cannonspectacle 46 Comments

Today is my birthday! As per tradition, I'd like to ask for any trivia you might have about the card Hot Soup, or any of guest-designed cards in M15. Thanks!

Hot Soup was designed by game designer James Ernest. He used to work at Wizards back in the day, and actually illustrated a Magic card - Reality Twist (from Ice Age).Happy Birthday!

Un-4 Soup Theme

New 27 Jun 2018 Asked by chetskolos 30 Comments

I like soup. Okay, not all soups, but many soups.

Food Cards Possibility

Hot Soup already made it as a card. : )

Unicycle Design Debate

New 23 May 2018 Asked by theeverlastingdave 72 Comments

Iā€™m in the weeds on this whole Unicycle thing. On the one hand, vehicles are vehicles. On the other hand, a unicycleā€™s purpose in the big top is closer to an equipment, as other QMs have pointed out. I think the best design in the GDS was a vehicle, but some of the equipments werenā€™t too far off. And for me, the flavor is closer to Hot Soup than any printed vehicle. So yeah, Iā€™m 50/50. Thanks for making this a conversation, itā€™s been fun.

Finding minor issues to endless quibble about is what Blogatog was made for. : )

Silly Elements in Magic

New 20 Dec 2015 Asked by magicjudge 13 Comments

I don't quite understand where the line is drawn for "silly" in magic. How is a somewhat silly-looking but still menacing creature like an Atog too silly, but a ridiculous card like Hot Soup is perfectly fine?

Hot Soup was an outside game design that we decided to push the boundaries as part of that promotion. It isn’t something we so of normally make.

Game Designer Trivia

New 22 Mar 2015 Asked by bandswithother 50 Comments

Since I know how much you love trivia, I have one that I think might stump you: who has been credited with designing exactly one card and illustrating one other?

Really now? : )The answer is game designer James Ernest. He illustrated the card Reality Twist in Ice Age and was the designer of Hot Soup in Magic 2015 as part of our game designer promotion where we had famous game designers of other games make a Magic card.Time for me to see if you know your trivia. Jamesā€™ wife, Carol, was the model for the illustration of a Magic card. What card was it?

Can we get more kitchen oriented cards? Sure there are a lot of butchers and now we have hot soup but my Ironroot Chef Commander deck is still missing a lot of utensils and creatures to man the kitchen and brew up awesome plays :)

We had the Kitchen Finks. : )
