Randomness in Red

New 02 Sep 2019 Asked by trovador240 12 Comments

Hello Mark. I have always found to fun the concept of the random on the red (Capricious Efreet, Grip of Chaos, Scrambleverse). When will we see more of that type of cards in Magic, do you know any deck that is like that in some format? (commander, standard, etc)

True randomness can often lead to cards that aren’t consistent enough to work in play. As such, we can make the occasional goofy red card, but it’s not a meaty design space.

Chaos Cards Future

What is the likely hood that we will see more chaos cards and or coin flip cards in the future or even a sub theme is a set? I.e. Game of Chaos, possibility storm, confusion on the ranks, impulsive maneuvers, or Grip of Chaos?

Sub games have become a silver border only thing. (Unstable has one.) We don’t do a lot of coin flipping but it’s still allowed in black border.

Spells and The Stack

Regarding spells referencing the stack, I can only find four cards in Magic history whose printed rules text references it: Grip of Chaos, Mirari, Radiate, and Lightning Storm. Only Lightning Storm's oracle text still does, but, I'm not gonna lie, I have no desire to see anything similar in Standard.

The secret is that we can do all the effects we want without having to mention it.

Ashnod's Coupon & Grip Chaos

How does Ashnod's Coupon work with Grip of Chaos (thing that actually happened)

Grip of Chaos doesn’t affect the effect of Ashnod’s Coupon because it has more than one target. Sorry.

Gleemax Chaos Interaction

Need a silver-bordered layers ruling: What happens when I have both Gleemax and Grip of Chaos in play?

Gleemax only lets you make decisions when a decision needs to be made. Grip of Chais will keep that from happening.
