Furnace of Rath

Furnace of Rath Query

New 13 Apr 2023 Asked by sombramainexe 23 Comments

Un-Rules Question. Is Furnace of Rath a wordy spell or does it depend what version I play? The tempest printing is only 2 lines but the most recent printing is 4. How does this apply to cards without oracle-accurate printings.

It applies to what is actually written on the card. That’s how acorn rules work. They look at the actual card you’re playing with.

Furnace Enchantment Design

Furnace of Rath seems to be the first enchantment that doubles something. Did you design that one?

But of course.

Slivers Evolution

New 26 Apr 2018 Asked by petruscaex 40 Comments

"All tribal cards now only affect your things." But slivers had that hivemind explanation, has their evolution made them capable of planning, making strategies and war against their own kind?

Slivers since their introduction have a range of their effect. This range was how the Weatherlight crew defeated them in the Furnace of Rath.

Gisela's Design Origins

New 28 Nov 2017 Asked by txzab 35 Comments

Good afternoon from Kadena. My birthday was recently the 22nd. Thanks for being awesome and doing birthday questions. So my question is about what interesting loreor creativity was behind my favorite card Gisela blade of goodnight/ Gisela broken blade? Thank you

Gisela the Blade of Goldnight’s design came about because we were trying to find two effects, one in red and one in white that mirrored one another. I decided to look at enchantments for effects and stumbled across Furnace of Rath, something I made in my first set Tempest. Doubling damage and halving damage fit the bill, so we put it on Gisela. Happy Birthday!

Kamigawa Tempest Trivia

Birthday question time again: Any trivia on Kamigawa or the Tempest block?

The cards Furnace of Rath and Death Pits of Rath predate the plane officially being named Rath. We liked the sound of the name on those two cards so much, we named the plane after them.Happy Birthday!

Mana Confluence vs City

New 12 Apr 2014 Asked by kingrames 28 Comments

I like that Mana confluence is just flat out better than city of brass, not intentionally weaker like tarnished citadel tried to be. Being on the opposite side of the table as an Icy Manipulator (remember how people used to talk about how broken THAT was?) was as frustrating as seeing furnace of rath. Mana confluence protects you from both! And at a much nicer cost...

It’s not strictly better. You can prevent the damage from City of Brass.

FTV Doubling Suggestions

New 16 Dec 2013 Asked by umbralunanox 51 Comments

What cards would be in FTV: Doubling? Off the top of my head all I can think of is Doubling Season and Parallel Lives, and those two are almost the same card.

A few off the top of my head: • Furnace of Rath • Chameleon Colossus • Doubling Cube  • Goblin Charbelcher • Kalonian Hydra • Solarian • Beacon of Immortality • Evolution Vat • Game of Chaos • Gratuitous Violence • Inquisitor’s Flail

Getting Card Signed

New 11 Aug 2013 Asked by chainedcurses 35 Comments

How would I go about getting a card signed by you? (It's an Atog...)

Send it along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Mark Rosewater c/o Wizards of the Coast 1600 Lind Ave. SW Renton, WA 98057 For those that have read this fifty times before, a new Magic factoid for you: The name of the card Furnace of Rath predates the plane being called Rath. We liked the name of the card and said, “Let’s just call it Rath.” To which I replied immediately thereafter, “We have to have a card called Apes of Rath.”

Card Design Preferences

New 22 Jun 2012 Asked by choppenstantz 4 Comments

I mentioned it in a comment, but really, I do think putting "you control" or "your opponents" is the worst thing you can do to a card. I will always love Second Sunrise over Faiths Reward, Furnace of Rath over Gratuitous Violence, and Pandemonium over Warstorm Surge, simply because there were more interactive, thought-intensive, and required you to plan around them. They were fun because they had a chance to backfire, not just one-sided set-and-forget "this helps me win harder" cards.

Our data shows you are in the minority on this issue. We’ll still make things universal in effect when we think it’s important to the card but our default right now is affecting only yours or the opponents’ stuff depending on the effect.
