Finale of Devastation

Searching Usage in Other Zones

New 14 Mar 2022 Asked by onebuckchuck 18 Comments

"I’m not sure other zones get searched. " Cards like Surgical Extraction and Necromentia search opponent's hands and graveyards, and Finale of Devastation, Boonweaver Giant, and Chandra, Heart of Fire search your own graveyard for specific cards. It mostly seems to be used in conjunction with library searching to broaden an effect and in cases where the effect is looking for a specific card.

I think you only “search” another zone when doing it in conjunction with searching a library, so it would be odd to restrict “searching” and have it affect other zones only when the library is also searched.

Finale of Devastation Ruling

Is Finale of Devastation considered a bend or a break of the color pie? The reanimation effect seems odd for green.

It’s a bend. Green can regrow creatures and can add mana to your mana pool, so it can do the component pieces and nothing about it undermines green’s weakness.

Is Finale of Devastation a break then? Or a bend?

It’s a bend. Green can regrow any card (including creatures) from the graveyard and can put a creature from its hand onto the battlefield.

Tutor Cards Template

Is there any way that future "tutor for CMC X" cards (like finale of devastation) could get a new template that allowed you to search and decide what card you want before deciding on the value of X?

I think you have to pay mana and thus declare X begore the spell resolves.

Color Pie Questions

Hi Mark, some color pie questions for you: is Repudiate in green (counter triggered abilities), also is reanimation now in green (finale of devastation)?

Green is secondary (to blue) in countering activated abilities (although the ability as a whole isn’t used much). Green can have creatures that can get themselves back from the graveyard, but reanimation isn’t green. Black is primary and white secondary in reanimation.
