Multicolor Cards Rarity

New 05 Jan 2023 Asked by attracte 34 Comments

Hi Mark, premier sets typically have only one cycle of multicoloured cards at lower rarities, usually uncommon creatures for the draft archetypes. Why is that?I feel like simple and fun cards like Electrolyze or Growth Spiral are now only printed in multicolour sets because of this "one cycle" restriction.

The restriction doesn’t come from having a default number of cycles. We only put multicolor cards at common when there’s a mana base to support it, which usually only happens in multicolor sets.

Analyzing Electrolyze and Cunning Strike

Hey MaRo,Why are Electrolyze and Cunning Strike Blue? Neither has an ability that is uniquely Blue, as Red gets cantrips. Are they set filler cards for multicolored slots?

What blue is adding to both those cards is reducing the mana cost as blue gets card drawing much more efficiently than red.

Reprint Challenges

Supertype Izzet also means that it becomes basically impossible to reprint, for example, Electrolyze.

The inconsistency with old Ravnica cards would cause numerous problems.

Rule Clarity and Consistency

One of the hardest things for new players to grok (in my opinion) is the idea of a spell fizzling out when the target is sacrificed. For example, if you electrolyze something and they sacrifice it in response, you don't get to draw a card. Has there been any talk in R&D to change this?

There has been talk, yes. It is very unintuitive, but we need the rules to be consistent so it’s proven to be a tricky issue to solve.

Colorpiewise Challenges

Couldn't you argue (not well) that you're both gaining life and paying it to draw with Electrolyze?

Just because you can technically do something with a color does not mean it fits colorpiewise. This is a hard concept for many players to grasp, Blue can put things on top of the library. Blue can exile mill the top of the library. That doesn’t mean blue gets to exile permanents on the battlefield.

Card Design Logic

Sorin's Thirst + Sign in Blood = almost Electrolyze?

Yet we wouldn’t print a BBBB sorcery - CARDNAME deals 2 damage to target creature. Draw two cards. A + B doesn’t always equal C. : )

Gameplay Mechanics Insight

"Decking the opponent, for example, comes up much more often than needing to sacrifice a creature to fizzle a creature destruction spell with a secondary effect." This is definitely untrue in the games that I play. I'm primarily a Commander player and fizzling 2 for 1 value removal like Warleader's Helix or Electrolyze comes up way more often than decking.

Reading over the comments, I believe my statement was false. That said, I don’t believe it’s important for the game to make it easy to fizzle spell effects attached to kill cards.
