Duneblast

All Creatures Fight/Bite Spell

A theoretical “all creatures fight/bite” spell seems like it’s going to be Day of Judgment (or at least Duneblast) in 99% of situations. Seems like it goes squarely into the “deathtouch + ETB fight” category to me, even if a functional template could be figured out.

It would probably be multicolored, if we did it.

Card Design Philosophy

RE: Fell the Mighty - This is a Wrath that can be countered by instant speed removal, but you said in your podcast that Duneblast in KTK was designed to avoid this, so why wasn't the same philosophy applied to Fell the Mighty?

It’s good for cards to have answers.

Duneblast Origins

Hey Mark! My prerelease promo was Duneblast, and it looks gorgeous in foil. Do you have any trivia about this card, or it's flavor text?

Duneblast was originally designed to be a preview card in From the Vault: Annihilation. The set didn’t have a green card in it at the time and we were asked if the preview card could have green in it. It was later decided not to have a preview card but I kept it in Khans of Tarkir because I thought it was a cool card in the clan that most needed it.

Duneblast Designer Inquiry

I pulled Duneblast as my promo last night, and i was curious, who designed the card? and can i send it in to get signed?

It was a member of the design team. My guy says maybe Ken Nagle or Mark Gottlieb. If you send it in, I’ll ask the designer to sign it but I can’t promise anything other than I’d sign it.

Set Design Decision

" I kept [Duneblast] in the file even though the reason it was designed went away. It was still a fine addition for Abzan." Surely you're not implying that you would have let a card that -wasn't- a fine addition go through just for the FTV, would you? In an article on color bleed, you mentioned that only legitimate answer to "Why is this card in the set" is "because the design needs it" - that's still true, even if that are other bonus reasons for a card to exist, right?

The card would not have stayed in the set if it didn’t serve the set. The goal was to make a card that served From the Vault and Khans of Tarkir.
