Chalice of the Void

Everflowing Chalice Design

New 15 Jun 2023 Asked by itsgadang 30 Comments

Hello Mark,I just listened to your podcast on 0-Mana Artifacts and loved it but it got me wondering if you ever considered for everflowing chalice to work similar to chalice of the void (Manacost XX insted of 0 with Multikicker)?

No, because we were trying to make it work with multikicker, the new mechanic in the set.

Taxing Artifacts in Color Pie

New 02 Mar 2022 Asked by deyuil 25 Comments

Are "taxing artifacts" still in the "generic" color pie? i.e., Sphere of Resistance, Trinisphere, and Chalice of the Void (although Chalice is a bit different). Those effects seem to be on White cards more often in recent history (Sphere of Resistance is Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, and Chalice of the Void is similar to Sanctum Prelate).

Taxing is primary white, secondary blue.

Adventure and Chalice

How do adventure cards interact with cards like chalice of the void? Are they mana costs added up?

No. Their mana cost is the mana cost of the creature.

Eldrazi Inclusion Criteria

New 04 Mar 2018 Asked by blaze-1013 37 Comments

"They (the big colorless ones - aka the most iconic Eldrazi) tend to need a decent amount of support and are hard to splash." While I get limited concerns stuff like Nicol Bolas, Conflux, Akroma, Plague Wind and Sundering Titan are similarly hard to cast and Chalice of the Void, Doomsday, and Blood Moon don't even do anything in limited. Personally, if Conflux can make it an Eldrazi should have been a high enough priority to also make it.

The problem is if we included everything that some players felt “must be included”, it wouldn’t all fit. It’s easy to look through the lens of “no, just this one thing” and find space, but that’s not the reality of how a set like Masters 25 is put together.

Understanding Rarity Shifts

The rarity questions were ones that a lot of people missed so it seems like a great chance for you to explain the thought processes behind rarity shifting cards, as it would mean even WOTC got the rarity wrong the first time. Could you go into detail on the rarity shifts for some cards, such as Chalice of the Void or Aether Vial, so future potential designers know how to correctly apply rarities to cards?

In two weeks, I have a column all about rarities where I go into the topic in detail.

Artifact Theme Choice

I noticed that all the masterpieces that are "prison" artifacts(Sphere of Resistance, Chalice of the Void, etc) are in Aether Revolt. Was this intentional?

Yes.

Mirrodin Block Reference

In ask wizards March 2003, || "We haven't... yet. Although that's about to change. The Mirrodin block (next year's block) has a card in it that started as the card of a non-Invitational winner. We've tweaked it a little but if you're familiar with the non-winners' cards, you'll recognize it." || So, what's the card you're talking about? I couldn't find it

I was talking about Chalice of the Void based in a card submitted at a Magic Invitational by future Hall-of-Famer Gary Wise.

Drafting MM

Hey MaRo, I just wanted to say Modern Masters was the most fun limited environment I have ever played in. We did two drafts in the store and in the first one first picked cryptic command and drafted a solid control deck and second game got to go desperate ritual splice ritual splice burnspell play second ritual chalice of the void for 1 lava spike empty the warrens turn 4. Never got to play storm before, so that felt pretty sweet.

XX Mechanic Explained

New 29 Jul 2012 Asked by flashchi 2 Comments

OK.. this is more of a rules question. How does XX work?! I have been playing magic for almost 3 years now.. and i still dont understand... trust me, im an avid fan of Google, but there are so many different answers that i dont know who's right.. so i decided to go for a direct approach! lol

Let’s take Chalice of the Void. Assume you want to stop all two-mana spells. That means X is equal to 2. If that is the case, then you have to spend two for each X.  So to stop two-mana spells, you have to spend 4 to cast Chalice of the Void.

XX Costs Rarity

New 25 Mar 2012 Asked by juror8 0 Comments

I remember reading somewhere that you guys don't put XX costs on cards anymore (a la Conflagrate, or perhaps more famously, Chalice of the Void). I was just wondering why? As a math geek XX costs were always kind of cool to me.

It’s not that we never do XX costs. We just do them very sparingly as yes they are quite confusing to many players.
