Breya, Etherium Shaper

The Goblin Haberdasher Rule

New 07 Apr 2022 Asked by exarchofsechrima 74 Comments

Hi Mark! Un-rules question! If a character was, hypothetically, wearing strips of metal on her head twisted in the shape of a hat in her artwork, would that count as her wearing a hat for the purpose of Goblin Haberdasher? (I am of course referring to the new SL artwork of Breya, Etherium Shaper.)

A creature is considered to be wearing a hat even if that hat is made out of part of their own body as long as the object is shaped to resemble a hat which Breya’s head covering does do in the new art. As a corollary, a shapeshifter that shapeshifts part of their body into a hat, so they appear to have a hat, is “wearing a hat” for purposes of Goblin Haberdasher.

Aesthetics vs. Balance

In your GDC talk you say that aesthetics matter but I've been noticing trends where that's not happening anymore for some reason, specifically regarding burn. For instance, Collective Defiance deals 4 damage to a creature and/or 3 to a player, why? Same deal with Breya, Etherium Shaper, which isn't even legal in standard and was made for a format where players start with 40 life, so again WHY? Please make aesthetics great again, Maro!

Spells almost always start aesthetically pleasing, but often for developmental balancing reasons, costs have to change.

Font Size Issue

Sen Triplets type line has reduced font size to fit "wizard" after "legendary artifact creature - human". why didn't Breya, Etherium Shaper also have the text size reduced to make her an Artificer?

We try to avoid shrinking font sizes below a certain size.

Breya's Blue Nature

Breya, Etherium Shaper is blue cause both Esper is blue and blue is the main artifact color.

Breya's Color Complexity

What about Breya, Etherium Shaper makes her blue, mechanically? Pia and Kiran Nalaar both have the first ability, and her charm has a red, white, and black mode. Sacrificing artifacts is red, too.

And now you see why four color design is so difficult. : )
