Misusing Terms

New 18 May 2014 Asked by kararakara-deactivated20210917 24 Comments

Doesn't luckylooter need to think about the term 'strictly better'? siege mastodon is not better in your deck than armored cancrix if you have islands/blue mana sources but not plains/white mana sources.

People misuse the term “strictly better” all the time.

Creature Power Levels

New 18 May 2014 Asked by luckylooter 17 Comments

Why would a designer want to put a strictly better creature in the same set as another at the same rarity (common)? I ask because of Armored Cancrix, a vanilla 2/5 for 4U and Siege Mastodon, a vanilla 3/5 for 4W both appearing in M14. Why wouldn't the designer want to use the Cancrix's design space to show what Blue does with defensvie creatures, rather than show it being less creature-powerful than white?

I think a little direct comparison of vanilla power level is fine. Both cards will see play in limited formats.

Dwarves in Blue

In your recent statement about Dwarves not being "smart" enough to be Blue, does that mean that Aquus Stead, Air Servant, Aetherling, Armored Cancrix, Bane Alley Broker, Benthic Giant, Breaching Hippocamp, Chorus of the Tides, etc. are all smart? In the past you've noted that just because something is blue doesn't necessarily make it smart. Dwarves are artificers, which fits into Blue pretty well, and can be closely associated with Equipment (just like Blue).

I was making a joke. I do not think dwarves are particularly blue as they do not traditionally seek out knowledge nor tend to play up any of blue’s key attributes. Without a major reworking of what dwarves represent, I feel they are mostly red and white.

Cube Request

04/02/2013: Maro, I have an awkward complaint. There's no mono-blue, CMC 6, vanilla creature. I need one for my terrible cube. The other slots are filled with Wandering Ones, Lemengrid Warden, River Kajin, Amphin Cutthroat, Armored Cancrix, [missing], and Vizzerdrix. Filling in that missing 6 drop would be much appreciated! Oh, and I mean strictly vanilla. Right now, Shoal Serpent is it's placeholder, because it's not exactly french vanilla whenever there's a land drop. Okay, thanks! :)

I’ll see what I can do.

Unplayable Cards Purpose

New 03 Sep 2012 Asked by mongrel714-blog-blog 7 Comments

I just read your "when good cards go bad" article on why bad cards exist. It was very good at explaining why underpowered rares such as One With Nothing or Mudhole exist, but I'm still stumped as to why unplayably bad cards are made. Mostly, I'm referring to overpriced vanilla creatures such as Barbtooth Wurm, Thraben Purebloods, or Armored Cancrix. These are cards that wouldn't appear in any deck, limited or otherwise. Why do they exist?

We have data from Magic Online. You would be surprised what actually gets played.
