Distribution of Unique Secret Lairs

New 14 Jul 2024 Asked by armadagon 4 Comments

Mark, there are still three secret Lairs that have mechanically unique cards: Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Dr Who: Regeneration, and Secret Lair X Lara Croft. Previous "Universes Within" versions of mechanically unique Secret Lair cards were reprinted via The List, but with The List being phased out as of Bloomburrow, how does Wizards plan on distributing these cards in the future?

It hasn’t been announced yet.

Printing Universes Within Versions

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by krobat 3 Comments

Would Universes Within versions of cards from non-Secret Lair products that are deemed important to reprint be allowed to be printed as part of other sets or products, or would they only be put on the List?

Reprinting any card follows the rules of reprints, meaning there are a lot of places it can be used. The challenge for certain Universes Beyond cards, a pretty small amount, is if we want to reprint it with a different creative, but have it count as the same card (meaning you can’t play eight of them in formats where they are legal).

Concern About 'Universes Within'

New 23 Jun 2024 Asked by kidcincinnati 4 Comments

Hey Mark! Someone online said something that concerned me. They said you had made a statement that there will be no more “Universes Within”. I read the post they referenced, and it seemed to me you had only been talking about Within as an exclusive product, but that occasional inclusions like the Street Fighter within cards will still happen for mechanically unique Lairs. I could but wrong, but some folks online believe the former and I was hoping for clarity.

The unique Universes Beyond Secret Lair content will eventually get a “Universes Within” treatment. I was talking about how all Universes Beyond cards in non-Secret Lair products won’t get “Universes Within” counterparts, although we reserve the ability to make any ones we deem necessary.

UB Sets and UW Reprints

New 21 May 2024 Asked by jambrose 1 Comments

Hi Mark,With the continued plan of 2 UB sets a year, is there any more concrete planning yet for UW reprints. There are lots of mechanically fun cards that will be fun in universe already, but with the speed the UB cool is going to be growing, it would seem prudent to be planning how to integrate them now, unless the plan is to license reprints of the original UB card, which would be helpful to know as a player.

We are setting up means by which to do Universes Within reprintings if we need them, but it’s not going to be all that many cards that need it. We sell *a lot* of Universes Beyond cards which will meet demand in most cases.

Universes Within Plans

New 16 Apr 2024 Asked by blogatog 28 Comments

Are there any plans to make a Universes Within set for mtgo. Filled with magic versions of cards from Universes Beyond sets?

Not currently. The current market research says there isn’t a large enough audience for it. We’ll keep checking in though to see if the sentiment changes.

Universes Within Printing

New 09 Apr 2024 Asked by quantext 26 Comments

Do Universes Within cards need to be reprinted in batches (like how all current Universes Within cards are groups based on Universes Beyond secret lairs) or is it possible to print them as one-offs where they're appropriate?

They can be one-of’s where appropriate.

Universes Within Reprints

Really appreciate the Universes Within reprints in Thunder Junction Commander decks. Getting access to the new lands from Fallout and wreck and rebuild is very nice. I also really appreciate the new art for the DND flavored stuff to properly put it into Magic. Cowboy hats off to whoever got them in the decks.

I’ll pass along the comments to the casual play design team.

Retro Frame UB Cards

New 23 Mar 2024 Asked by tybonel13 16 Comments

Could a Universes Beyond card be printed/reprinted in the retro frame, or is it more likely that a Universes Within version would be made for the retro frame?

Anything is possible, but I’ll say it isn’t very likely.

Universes Within Characters

New 10 Mar 2024 Asked by sparkyyoungupstart 34 Comments

Is there a chance we'll ever see more cards depicting the characters created for Universes Within? As in, will we ever see a card for Bjorna or The Howling Abomination that isn't a reprint for a Universes Beyond character but an original card? I just think it would be cool and make them feel a little more "within" than they already are, if that makes sense lol.

I can imagine us doing it one day.

Reprint Timing Adaptation

New 10 Mar 2024 Asked by j-waffles 32 Comments

In 2021, WotC released an article saying that mechanically unique universes beyond secret lair cards would get universes within reprints approximately 6 months later. The exact wording of this was “The [universes within] versions will be available in The List, findable in Set Boosters…” Set boosters no longer exist, but The List still does. With the advent of play boosters, is the rule of “approximately 6 months later” still the case? Or is that promise now void because there are no Set Boosters anymore?

As the game evolves, we have to adapt. We still plan to make sure unique mechanical Secret Lair cards, in some form, find a home in randomized booster product.

Slang Terminology

is "universes within" an official term, or just slang/grokkable?

Just slang.

Universes Within Feedback

Where can I voice my official preference for Universes Within? I don't recall seeing any polls or questions in the regular surveys. I try to respond to all of them.Universes Beyond hurts my brain. I don't want to play Gambit, Gambler Ninja when my opponent's Nuclear Shelter enters and gives me 3 Geiger Counters. Particularly after Frodo has been Tempted by the ring but had to chump block a Tyranid King. Frodo died but was exiled instead by the Flying Saucer's Anti-Grav beam. Jace watched, baffled, as Megatron argued with Dr. Malcolm about the insignificance of human life. Please help me. Give me a choice or a voice?

Magic is a game where you craft your own deck. There are over 25,000 cards to choose from that aren’t Universes Beyond. The idea that every mechanical design has to live on an in-universe concepted card is, both, simply not feasible, and not something the vast majority of Magic players feels is a necessity.

Universes Within Possibilities

New 26 Feb 2024 Asked by thephyrrus 44 Comments

You say that there aren't enough of us wanting Universes Within versions to warrant making a product for it. (And I get it, there's serious barriers there)But do you mean making a whole 'stand-alone' product, or even just finding a way to fit at least some candidate cards as reprints within other sets?(because there's lots of mechanically unique cards in UB that I *wish* I could play with, but can't, because I love core Magic too much use UB cards.)

I’m not saying we won’t find ways to make some Universe Within cards. I’m just saying a whole product is currently hard to justify.

Fallout Card Design Approach

New 21 Feb 2024 Asked by j-waffles 25 Comments

I think it’s a very good thing that fallout has more card names, types, and abilities that are not quote unquote “plane bound”. That is to say, cards with names, types, and abilities that could easily be reprinted elsewhere in magic without needing to do the universes within treatment. Obviously this can’t be done with legendary cards, and some UB cards are naturally going to have names and types tied to their IP (like gallifrey falls or tyrannids), or they’ll have names that aren’t inherently tied to their IP but certainly don’t fit in regular magic (like nuclear fallout or cyber conversion) but it’s nice that a lot of these cards that will likely be staples in various formats won’t have their chances of being reprinted bogged down. It seems to me like this is happening more in fallout than it did in previous UB sets. Is this intentional? Or is it just coincidence? It seems like a difficult line to tread, being evocative in flavor while simultaneously generic in name, but I think (based on the spoilers so far) fallout has been mostly good on this.

It depends a lot on the property.

P3K Reprints Possibility

New 04 Dec 2023 Asked by j-waffles 35 Comments

Could we ever see universes within reprints of the cards from P3K? Or is China considered canon in mtg lore?

Some, with more generic names, could get reprinted.

Universes Beyond Legends

New 01 Dec 2023 Asked by the0winter0soldier 17 Comments

Hey Mark, bouncing off the previous legendary creature questions, because Universes Beyond will tend to have more, how does this affect their power level? Are Universes Within legends more powerful on average because there are fewer? Really interested to hear how you balance this out 🙂

Power for legendary creatures is not correlative to how many appear in the set.

Universes Within Art Query

New 15 Nov 2023 Asked by weebos 30 Comments

Generally Universes Within reprints have stayed in our standard planes, but if you were reprinting something like Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, are the Un-planes fair game for the art?

I don’t know the philosophy on Magic withing reworks. My gut is they’ll stick to the main multiverse.

Supplemental Set Mechanics

New 05 Nov 2023 Asked by cgreyl3 33 Comments

Can we get a scale for mechanics returning in supplemental sets or maybe UB mechanics coming to Universes Within premier sets

There’s really not much off limit for supplemental sets, so a scale doesn’t work great. For example, we’ve done Storm multiple times.

Universes Within Mechanics

New 30 Oct 2023 Asked by theothin 39 Comments

How would Universes Within handle cards that define permanents as having specific names, like The Eleventh Hour and The Rani? Would the UW versions use new names that are treated as equivalent?

Yes.

Universes Within Demand

New 27 Oct 2023 Asked by weebos 67 Comments

Do you find there is a significant demand for Universes Within versions of Universes Beyond cards, or does it mostly come from a small minority of players?

It’s a small minority of players, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a important sentiment to understand.
