Traumatize

Fractional Numbers Rule

New 28 Jan 2023 Asked by mowu-moment 22 Comments

Un-rules question: Are fractions numbers for the sake of More or Less and Truss, Chief Engineer? e.g. could I activate Truss targeting a Traumatize to make someone mill three-halves of their library?

No. Truss only works with natural numbers.

Traumatize Fun Intent

Did you make Traumatize able to target yourself on purpose? If so thank you for all the fun living death and rise of the dark realms shenanigans

I’m a big fan of “target player”.

Trivia: Design Insight

I was hoping i could get some belated birthday trivia. Your choice Traumatize, Orcish Conscripts (love the art), or both if you're feeling froggy

I designed Traumatize with the goal to “make the splashiest milling card ever”. Happy Belated Birthday!

Can you tell me,who made traumatize so i can write them a strongly worded letter of my disapproval?

That would be me. I wanted to make a splashy milling spell.

Traumatize Rarity

You said that it Traumatize were to be printed again, you'd probably make it a mythic. But it was printed just as long ago as last year, in M14. Why wasn't it made a mythic?

No, I said if there were mythic rares at the time it would have been a mythic rare. It’s lost a little of its wow factor over the years.

Traumatize's Impact

"I’m very proud of Traumatize’s design. It was created as a card that made your eyes go wide." Does that mean if it were made today, it'd be mythic?

Probably.

Traumatize Card Pride

Mark, thanks for making so many awesome cards. My cousin who is fairly new to the game just saw Traumatize and it blew his mind. I gave him the card and he immediately made a mill deck with a little help, and has been having a lot of fun with it.

I’m very proud of Traumatize’s design. It was created as a card that made your eyes go wide.

Favorite Mill Cards

As the design person most invested in mill, what is your favorite card that puts cards from the library into the graveyard?

I’ll always have a soft spot for Traumatize.

Traumatize Design Story

New 02 Apr 2014 Asked by mtgfan 36 Comments

Hey! It's my birthday (April 2). I was wondering if I could get some interesting information about Traumatize, a signature card I used when I got into Magic a few years ago? Thanks!

Odyssey had a bit of a milling theme (as most graveyard sets do) and I was looking to make the biggest, baddest milling card we ever made. What’s the biggest milling spell I could actually make, I asked myself. I decided that half your library was as big as we could go. And that is how Traumatize came to be. Happy birthday!

Fun vs Winning

New 08 Aug 2013 Asked by monktyddpl 12 Comments

in a limited sense would you rather build a fun deck to play or a winning one? like for instance in an m14 draft I got a traumatize and built a mill deck and slammed that traumatize anytime I could because it was fun. sure I lost most of my matches but it was fun. so fun or win?

My Johnny sensibilities always overtake my Spike ones and I do things that will make cool decks not necessarily winning ones.

Because where there’s a mill, there’s a way. : )

Milling Mechanic Philosophy

New 02 Mar 2013 Asked by espermage 10 Comments

When it comes to milling, Blue seems a lot less discriminating than black. Blue's effects value quantity (Traumatize and many more) while Black has cards like Sadistic Sacrament and Bitter Ordeal that value quality. Isn't that strange, flavor-wise ? I have trouble seeing a black mage actually caring about which memories he will erase, while a blue mage settles for a not-so-subtle mass memory destruction. Could you explain ?

Blue’s a little kinder than black. Blue makes you forget. Black breaks into your mind and rips pieces out.

Mill Strategy Colors

New 01 May 2012 Asked by mediocreman5-blog-blog 9 Comments

I've always been a fan of Mill as a strategy, but I've been wondering something recently. Why is it that Blue (the color of knowledge and intellect) gets the "brute force" milling effects like traumatize, while black (the "win at any cost" color) gets the precision milling effects like cabal therapy and surgical extraction? It seems like the styles should be flipped.

Blue overwhelms your mind while black destroys parts of it.
