Toy Boat

Toy Boat Creation

New 31 Jan 2023 Asked by makesasound 38 Comments

Mark! My birthday was yesterday, and I hereby invoke the right of birthday trivia. Could you please tell me something about one of my pet favorite Un-cards, Toy Boat?

That card came about because I liked the idea of a cumulative upkeep effect that made you say the name of the card and it was a tongue twister. I then wrote down all the tongue twisters I could think of and Toy Boat was the winner.Happy Birthday!

Un-questions and Rules

Un-questions, 1) If my native language is not English do I have to say "toy boat" in Toy Boat's cumulative upkeep or my language translation? 2) if I flick Richard Garfield, Ph. D. or get another one into play, does the new one see the cards named before? I know normally it would but isn't it unfun? Also, I'd love to see a black un-legend to complete the circle.

1) You have to say the actual words “Toy Boat”.2) Flickering Richard Garfield PhD doesn’t reset the no repeat rule. The Un-game remembers.

Dealing Half Damage

New 05 Jun 2016 Asked by nolongerbreathedin 12 Comments

The reason I specified Toy Boat was to say that it was silver-bordered. As such, it is possible to deal only half a point of damage at a time.

You cannot assign half damage unless a creature has half power and then only a single half can be assigned.

Trample and Deathtouch

New 04 Jun 2016 Asked by nolongerbreathedin 32 Comments

Say I attack Bob with a 3/3 with trample and deathtouch. He blocks with two Toy Boats. How much damage can I do to him?

Toy Boat for the purposes of this question is just a 3/3. It’s cumulative upkeep is irrelevant. Your 3/3 deals 1 damage to the first Toy Boat. With Deathtouch, that’s enough to kill it so 2 damage tramples over. 1 damage is all that’s needed to kill the second Toy Boat. That means 1 damage tramples over to Bob.

Cube Playability Strategy

The way to make any card, silver border or otherwise, cube playable, is to make it powerful enough to draft. Blast from the past and Booster tutor are particularly sweet ones. And while there exists a large varieties of cubes, players tend to build powerful ones, so as funny as toy boat is, I would never include it in my cube.

Do people include Incoming! or Richard Garfield PhD? Those are both very powerful.

Un-Pro Tour Chances

Will the Un-Pro Tour ever really happen? I really want to see the pros playing with gotcha cards and Toy Boat.

I think an Un-Pro Tour is about unlikely to happen as just about anything Magic-related

Un-set Play Advice

New 31 Aug 2013 Asked by ihateattackads-blog 18 Comments

Ha, to clarify, I really do like the concept of the Un-sets, I was just saying that anecdotally, I think the cards themselves really shine alongside regular magic, and make for a confusing/diluted play experience when everything is a Cheatyface or Toy Boat or something. I'm sure you guys will figure out the third Un-set when the time is right. :)

We always advised players to mix in Un-cards with normal cards. The metaphor I used is that the Un-cards are like icing. They go better with cake rather than a bowl of icing. (Now I will get letters from the icing lovers that eat their icing in a bowl.)

Favorite Un Drawback

What's your favorite Un creature drawback? Mine is Toy Boat.

I’ve seen many a game hinge on that drawback. : )
