Time Lord

Creature Type Naming

New 14 Mar 2024 Asked by dude1818 31 Comments

Now that Time Lord is a creature type, could we get Power-Plant reverted back to Power Plant? Or does Plant as a different type make that ambiguous?

Time Lord was a one-time exception. We’re not planning on more two word creature types.

Time Lord Naming

New 16 Nov 2023 Asked by sirpidge 36 Comments

A question about the doctor who UB, why isn't the time lord creature type hyphenated like Assembly-Worker?

When working with an existing property you respect how the property does things. Time Lord isn’t hyphenated.

Trademark Naming

Sorry if this was already answered, but what happened when "Timelord" was suggested over "Time Lord"?

When doing a property, it’s important to properly represent it.

Rule 205.3b Update

New 22 Oct 2023 Asked by drecon84 25 Comments

Any word yet on what will happen to rule 205.3b?

I think we made one special exception for Time Lord. The current plan is to keep to the single creature type rule.

Praise for Psychic Paper

New 14 Oct 2023 Asked by abxxxy 37 Comments

Can you give high fives to the designer of 'Psychic Paper' from the WHO decks? My favorite thing while playing them was swinging with my time lord "Borborygmos Enraged"

Will do.

Two-Word Creature Types

New 12 Oct 2023 Asked by coding-diaries 36 Comments

One more "Time Lord" question! In Storm scale, what are the chances of using two-word creature types to signify flavor in a more targeted manner? (Say, an effect that affects a "Rabbit Warrior", not Rabbit OR Warrior, but specifically a Rabbit that is a Warrior)

The two word solution was a special use case to handle a very particular problem. We are not currently planning on doing other two word creature types.

Decrease.

Time Lord Creature Type Queries

How many questions about Time Lord being a two word creature type did you expect and do you think you’ll ever stop getting questions about it?

I did not expect this many originally, but now I do. : )

Time Lord Exception

New 10 Oct 2023 Asked by dapuppers 35 Comments

Hi Mark! Does “Time Lord” being a two-word, unhyphenated creature type raise the likelihood of other such creature types being made? Does it change your thoughts on unhyphenating Assembly-Worker, or combining Eldrazi Spawn (for example) into one?

Nothing is changing because of Time Lord. It’s a special rare exception.

Time Lord Naming

New 08 Oct 2023 Asked by iamthespineofmybook 46 Comments

I keep thinking that the two word situation of the "Time Lord" creature type could have been solved by referring to them as "Gallifreyan."Gallifrey is/was the Doctor and Master's home planet, and not everyone from that world was a Time Lord or Lady.I know it's far too late to change it, but that's what I probably would have done. That being said, I just did a quick search, and it seems that canon for Doctor Who was a bit inconsistent from time to time, as it both said that "not every Gallifreyan is a Time Lord" and, numerous times, that the species name was "Time Lord."

As with any Universes Beyond product, we work with the licensee who is the expert on the property to make sure we’re using the correct terminology.

Creature Type Clarity

New 06 Oct 2023 Asked by stanthedrybear 35 Comments

As someone who is a big fan of playing [Embiggen], please, PLEASE, have future "two word" creature types be hyphenated. I don't look forward to arguments about whether my Doctor gets +4/+4 or +5/+5

I think Time Lord is a special exception.

Hazezon Tamar Rule Quirks

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by stainlesssteven 46 Comments

The two word creature type discussion of time lord makes me think of hazezon tamar. The card makes "sand warriors" and exiles all "sand warriors" when it leaves. It does this by exiling all creatures with the type "sand" and "warrior" leading to some unintuitive rulings, like it will exile all creatures with all creature types (or exile a players board with Shields of Velis Vel). In my mind the card is clearly meant to exile the tokens it made. I get that magic has a bunch of weird rules interactions but this seems like something that can be "fixed" easily. I'm not saying it should be changed but what is your opinion? Do you like it the way it is now or would you go back and make it so it exiles only the tokens he makes?

The two word technology was created to solve a specific issue in Doctor Who. We’re not using it to redo cards from the past. It gets confusing quickly if used too often.

Time Lord Mechanics

New 04 Oct 2023 Asked by andalon-historian 37 Comments

Is there a mechanical reason why the two words Time Lord is important instead of having the Time type and the Lord type? I think having other time creatures, a time soldier or a time ape or such in non-DW Magic, would be awesome.

Time, alone as a modifier, is not normally how we do creature types.

Cavern of Souls Use

Time Lord.

Morophon As Doctor

Would Morophon be a doctor due to changeling?

Yep.EDIT: Note that Companions need exactly a Time Lord Doctor with nothing extra, so changeling won’t work for that purpose.

Doctor Creature Type

New 30 Sep 2023 Asked by androgeus 41 Comments

Will the new Doctor type be reserved only for The Doctor, or is there a possibility for it to be used for regular doctors?

Doctor is a creature type that can be used by Doctors. Time Lord is the thing specific to the Doctor.

Scientists in Innistrad

New 24 Sep 2023 Asked by missmoo77 37 Comments

Re: Scientists Is Innistrad considered too high fantasy for these cases? Or do you mean you're using it in more strictly no magic settings like in Universes Beyond? I figure that Innistrad would be a good place for a lot of errata if they were to happen as there are quite a bit of blue "wizards" that could be a flavor hit under Scientist instead. But I can also understand if Scientist may be more like Time Lord were it's saved for specific instances in no magic settings.

Scientist will be used in environments where the characters would be referred to as scientists.

Time Lord Interactions

New 12 Sep 2023 Asked by darkmagicpi 49 Comments

Can Doctor's Companions partner with The Valeyard (as they're a future Doctor)? Does a Universes-Beyond version of Vorthos naming The Doctor reduce the cost of The Valeyard? Is it weird if the answers to these questions are different?

The Valeyard is creature type Time Lord, so it interacts with things that mechanically care about a Time Lord. You are allowed to name any character that appears on a Magic card for Vorthos, so there’s not need for a Universes Beyond version.

Creature Type Plans

New 16 Aug 2023 Asked by lookoutscience 20 Comments

So far all the universes beyond cards brought onto The List have been normal magic creature types. But is there a plan to change them should they not be, like necron or time lord?

We will make a parallel creature type (meaning they’ll be treated the same by the rules) if need be.
