Regarding Stranglehold

Stranglehold is already a red card that prevents extra turns.

Red Color's Role in Rules

New 14 Dec 2021 Asked by girathon 45 Comments

I don't know how precedent setting it is, but Stranglehold prevents extra turns and is in Red.

That’s a weird card to be red. I wouldn’t use it as precedent. Red’s not really a rule setting color. EDIT: It is hating on two very blue things, and red needed it more than green in Commander. That’s how it ended up in red.

Stranglehold Color Choice

Why was Stranglehold red? The card feels very white.

It’s an anti-blue card. It wants to be in one of blue’s enemy’s colors.

Limiting Card Draws

Can’t white go in the opposite direction with things like Spirit of the Labyrinth which stop opponents from drawing extra cards? Could Stranglehold be printed in white?

It’s in white color pie, but we have to be careful how much of the game is restricting other people from doing things.

Red's Preventative Measures

Could red have the effect that doesn't allow people to search libraries (Stranglehold)? Could we see a Leyline with that ability?

Red isn’t usually all that preventative. It tends to punish players for doing things.

Extra Turn Recursion

New 17 Sep 2015 Asked by commandereterno 56 Comments

Maro, what if you worded extra turn cards as this: if your next turn is not an extra turn, take an extra turn. Something like stranglehold or Medomai, that would allow recursion but not abuse.

Let me be more blunt. We don’t want recursion of extra turns.

Absence of Black Spiders

New 17 Aug 2013 Asked by jotunn-ijuu 18 Comments

Hello :3 um, why are there no black or black green spiders?

Mostly because green has gotten a stranglehold on them partially because they’ve become so associated with reach, a green ability.

Emotional Red Spells

New 09 Aug 2012 Asked by zennithgp 6 Comments

"If you want red to feel more emotional, find spells that have some emotional resonance." What red spells do you feel exemplify emotional resonance? Stranglehold? Anger? Lash Out? Lightning Bolt? Ball Lightning? I can see how the title of a card would clearly convey an emotion, but that feels like good branding, rather than good design. What are cards whose designs have clear emotional resonance? Do cards have intrinsic resonance outside the context of the metagame or personal history?

EDIT: TUMBLR’S HAVING ISSUES. THE REAL QUESTION WAS WHY DOES NICOL BOLAS HAVE RED IN HIM? I think the red got in their to portray his dragon-ness. Personally, I don’t see a lot of red in Nicol Bolas personality-wise. He is not at all impulsive and doesn’t tend to let his emotions drive his decisions.
