Stet, Draconic Proofreader

Language Interaction with Stet

How does Stet, Draconic Proofreader work with cards that aren't in English/don't use the Latin alphabet? Would you have to reference the English card names of whatever is on the battlefield?

Technically, it doesn’t work with them. You can house rule it to the English version if you want.

Understanding Stet's Unique Design

I really like the design of Stet, Draconic Proofreader lately. His design is quite different than a lot of other silver bordered cards. Could I ask a little about the thought process designing him and what is going on in his art?

When I was figuring out what we wanted the new cards to do in Unsanctioned, it dawned on me that we’d never had an Un-Dragon, so I allocated one of the red slots to be that. My note to the designers was I wanted the Dragon to have a job not associated with Dragons. I believe Ari Nieh was the one who made the first version of this card. She made it a proofreader because she liked the idea of having it remove text off of cards. The art, by the way, shows Stet (an editing term) turning “mice” into “ice” by cutting off the “m”.

Question about Silver-bordered Cards

Silver-bordered question: I don't know my opponent's middle name, but control a Stet, Draconic Proofreader and have a lot of white mana. I activate Stet's ability targeting my opponent enough times to have safely deleted all the letters of their name. Can I activate Monkier Mage's second ability by paying a blue and saying nothing (which is now their middle name), or am I now unable to pay the cost of saying their name?

They have to have a name for you to pay the cost by saying it. Moniker Mage’s abilities don’t work if you or your opponent, respectively, don’t have a middle name.

Draconic Proofreader Peculiar Interaction

Silver-bordered question: How does Stet, Draconic Proofreader interact with permanents that have multiple names? Do you choose which name to erase a letter from, or does it apply to all of its names? Also, if my friend were to legally change their name in the middle of a Magic game after I've activated Stet, would the ability carry over and still have erased the first letter of their new name?

It erases the first letter from the name of your choice. And how slow is your game that your opponent is able to change their name in the middle of it? : )

Circumventing True-Name Nemesis

If my openent has a true name nemisis out can I use Stet, Draconic Proofreader on my own name so I can remove the true name nemisis?

True-Name Nenesus requires you to choose a player. It doesn’t necessarily require you to name them. You could point at them , for example, so Stet won’t help you.

Name Validity

Un-rules question regarding Stet, Draconic Proofreader. My name is William Jake Allen Forbes, I have always gone by Jake, but as William is my legal first name it is what comes up when dealing with bureaucrats and any official paperwork. For determining if I am a valid target for the damage would Stet, being a bureaucrat, look at William or Jake? P.S. Unsanctioned looks amazing by the way, look forward to playing with it.

It goes by what your known as, not your official name.
