'Small Creature' Definition in White

New 11 Jul 2021 Asked by wallycaine 57 Comments

I think the question for "why does the definition of 'small creature' keep changing for white" was referring more to reanimation effects and tutoring, such as Shepard of the Cosmos and Recruiter of the Guard. Some cards care about Mana Value of 2 or 3, some care about power of 2 or less, some care about toughness of 2 or less... there's a lot of variation. Is there any push to solidify a "generic" definition for this type of effect, or is it likely to keep changing for each card?

I think we want some flexibility to make different cards, so I don’t see a lot of value of locking it down too tightly.

Host/Augment Criteria

Does your earlier answer about augment cards mean that something like recruiter of the guard could find both halves of a Host/Augment pair that doesn't meet its criteria when separated?

An Augment card in any zone other than the battlefield doesn’t have a toughness.

Augment Card Mechanics

Hi Mark, Un-Rules Manager question here! For the purposes of cards that card about a card's power and/or toughness like Recruiter of the Guard, do creature cards with augment have P/T equal to the change it grants? Does a Half-Squirrel, Half- card have -1 power and 0 toughness? Thanks!

It has the power/toughness of the host adapted by the change of the augment. A 2/2 with -1/-0 is a ½.

Augment Cards Interaction

Regarding augment cards, how do they interact with cards like Ranger of Eos and recruiter of the guard?

Ranger of Eos works with Augment cards. They are creature cards with a converted mana cost of 0.

White Tutor Effects

White seems to be getting a few tutor effects in recent times (Call the Gatewatch, Recruiter of the Guard). Is this new design space that's being explored in White, and can we see more of it in the future?

White having tutors for specific subsets of cards is nothing new.
