Raging Goblin

Prior Keywords Origin

You mentioned there used to be nicknames for lifelink, vigilance, and haste before they were keyworded. What were they? What about other later keywords like reach, deathtouch, etc?

Vigilance was called the Serra ability after Serra Angel. Lifelink was called spirit link after the Legends card (which worked slightly differently than what we ended up keywording. Haste was called Raging after Raging Goblin or celerity which is what R&D called it.Reach was called the Spider ability after Giant Spider. Deathtouch was called the basilisk ability after Thicket Baslisk in Alpha. My point is that players will come up with slang usually based on the first and/or most popular card with the ability, but once we give it an official name, it eventually becomes the default. And yes, players always say they’re going to keep using the slang, but they don’t, not when the cards give it a real name.

Female Goblins Rarity

Why are so few female Goblins portrayed in Magic? The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the Aunties from Lorwyn/Shadowmoor and Goblin Matron, both of which are portrayed in a maternal role. Why not have something non-gendered like Raging Goblin be female in future art?

Here’s something really cool the creative team does. When concepting a block, they make sure to have half of the characters represented on cards be male and half be female. If goblins skew more male, I’m not sure why. A good question for Doug.

Creature Classification Clarified

Do Raging Goblin et al. count as french vanilla, virtual vanilla, or both?

A Raging Goblin (a 1/1 with haste) is both a French vanilla creature and a virtual vanilla creature. French vanilla creatures are creatures with only creature keywords so it passes. Virtual vanilla creatures are creatures that after the first turn in play functions essentially as a vanilla creature in play. We consider haste to meet that requirement (yes, there are circumstances that could make it matter but they are very rare) so it passes here as well.

Unusual Victory Tale

In one of my first ever games of Magic (I believe I was around 10 years old), I defeated an opponent using only a Bog Imp and a Raging Goblin. Do you have any funny victory stories you'd like to share?

I once played a game where my opening hand had only one land (this was pre-Paris mulligan). I played Black Vise on my first turn. I never drew another land and was never able to cast another spell. I won.
