Phyrexian Tribute Flavor Text

New 08 May 2021 Asked by wextalks 45 Comments

Phyrexian Tribute has flavor text quoting "Tales" by Afari, seemingly in support of Phyrexia. Was Afari a Phyrexian agent, or am I misreading this?

I don’t know. Anyone know the answer?

Artifact Destruction Color Pie Query

Is Phyrexian Tribute within modern color pie? Where/how does black destroy artifacts if at all?

Black is not supposed to be able to destroy artifacts. It’s one of the weaknesses of black.

Dislikes Color Weakness

How do R&D think of cards like Phyrexian Tribute? I find it fun of a color having very inefficient ways that can do what the color can't do normally.

I hate it. We think we’re communicating how bad a color is at something and then the color uses it because something is better than nothing. (See Hornet’s Sting that saw play in constructed.) The best way to communicate a vulnerability is to give the color no direct answer not a weak one.

Removing Off-Color Removal

Phyrexian Tribute. Will we see Black or red getting these types of removal anymore (i.e., offcolor abilities at a overly large cost)?

Hopefully not. As I’ve said when talking about Hornet Sting, I am not a fan of having a color do something but very poorly as a way to show it’s bad at it. The problem is when a color needs something badly enough, it will just use the weak card. Colors are as defined by what they can’t do as much as by what they can. The cleanest way to do this, I strongly believe, is by giving the color zero access to the ability. How do I know red is going to another color for enchantment destruction? Because it absolutely has to. Remember that game designer aren’t trying to make it easy for the player. Having to problem solve and find ways around problems is a big part of the fun of games. Yes, many people want answers for their color of choice that don’t exist but getting them in the end would only make the game less fun.
