Phage the Untouchable Drawback

Why isn’t the Phage the Untouchable drawback used more often to prevent shenanigans?

It’s a bit harsh.

Did your original design for Phage the Untouchable include her first ability, or was that added by development?

I had something similar to prevent abuse.

Trivia on Phage Design

New 25 May 2021 Asked by jillescas87 82 Comments

Hi Mark! Today is finally my birthday, so I wanted to check if you have any unheard trivia about my favorite character Phage the Untouchable. If not, then maybe some secret about New Phyrexia?

It’s my birthday too! I designed Phage before the character existed. I just liked the idea of a creature that killed you if it hit you. My plan was to find a home for the design, so I was very excited when I learned there was a character that killed anything she touched in the current set. I took my design, added deathtouch and made it legendary. Happy Birthday!

Hi Mark! Can I have some birthday trivia on Phage the Untouchable?

I designed the card a few months earlier but didn’t know what to do with it. Then I saw the story with Phage for the first time. I literally said, “I got this.” Happy Birthday!

Consideration for Creature Combination

New 18 Apr 2020 Asked by jillescas87 40 Comments

Was a sorcery or instant or effect that mutates two non human creatures to combine them ever considered? Would have loved to combine Phage the Untouchable with a 1/1 squirrel to make the perfect squirrel assassin...

Combining any two creatures leads to a bunch of rules issues. It’s why Grusilda is silver-bordered.

Phage Trivia for Birthday

Hey MaRo can I get trivia about either of my favourite cards, Phage the Untouchable or Progenitus, for my birthday?

I designed Phage a while before Legions but didn’t know what to do with the design. When I learned about the character of Phage, I was like, “I got this.”Happy Birthday!

Phage's Ability Context

I have out Over My Dead Bodies and attack with Phage the Untouchable. As she is in a graveyard, would it still cause game loss, or is the ability only relevant on the field?

Her ability still works.

Phage Trigger Question

New 23 May 2017 Asked by sadcryingclown 34 Comments

If I reveal Phage the Untouchable on top of my library with Yet Another Aether Vortex do I lose the game?

No, because enter the battlefield triggers don’t trigger with Yet Another Aether Vortex.

Phage Game Loss

New 15 May 2016 Asked by drkrieger 19 Comments

Un-Rules questions: If I cast Yet Another Aether Vortex and the top card of my opponent's library is Phage the Untouchable, does she lose the game because Phage wasn't cast from her hand?

Phage’s ability is an “enter the battlefield” trigger and Yet Another Vortex doesn’t trigger “enter the battlefield” abilities.

If Yet Another Aether Vortex flips over Phage the Untouchable, do you lose?

You do not because “enter the battlefield” triggers aren’t triggered.

Phage's Design Origins

New 08 Mar 2015 Asked by zanzaben 45 Comments

It was my birthday earlier this weekend but I was too distracted by all the amazing PAX stuff to ask. So can I get any info on my favorite card Phage the Untouchable

I designed a card I called Super Gorgon (and one time Super Basilisk) which was a creature so deadly it didn’t just kill creatures it damaged but players as well. When we were given the description of Phage to design a card around, I said, “I got this.”In playtesting, some crazy combos were made using her so we added the “you die if she’s not normally cast” rider.Happy Birthday!

Conspiracy Release Story

New 07 Jun 2014 Asked by thevoldemortician 17 Comments

Mark, I'd like to share my Conspiracy release story with you. My plan was to play multiple Infectious Horrors, names with Secrets of Paradise. I then used these to ramp into Scourge of the Throne and Phage the Untouchable. Then, I would cast multiple Wrap in Flames, named with Brago's Favor, making my opponents unable to block. Finally, I would attack with Scourge of the Throne and trigger its dethrone, hitting somebody with Phage and somebody else with damage, then doing it again. Had a blast!

I actually made all three.

Deathtouch Misconception

New 17 Sep 2013 Asked by shsl-legislacerator-blog 23 Comments

Maro, I know you're generally not a rules guy, but is it true that when an opponent hits me with a creature that has death touch, I die?

Only if it has a power equal to your life total. : ) Deathtouch does not work on players. If you would like to see a card that does do that, look up Phage the Untouchable on Gatherer.
