Mizzium Mortars

No Guns in Fantasy

New 08 Nov 2014 Asked by nick012000 40 Comments

Maybe no automobiles, but how about a return to the world of Portal Second Age? I mean, if the Izzet can have their Mizzium Mortars, why can't one plane's white Soldiers have muskets?

Guns both feel too modern undercutting the fantasy feel and mess with Magic being the weapon of the game. Why throw a fireball at my opponent when I could just shoot them?

Keyword Concept Challenge

New 04 Jul 2014 Asked by canna12 51 Comments

Has R&D ever considered a keyword that's kind of the inverse of hexproof, i.e., the permanent with the keyword isn't affected by sweeping effects? For example, a 1/1 green creature with this keyword would die to Doom Blade or Mizzium Mortars, but not Supreme Verdict, Drown in Sorrow, or an overloaded Mizzium Mortars. Sort of like "protection from board wipe" (though "protection" doesn't quite describe it). Is this interesting or too clunky to work?

The rules don’t work for it. We’ve tried to make that card for years.

Standard Guild Mechanics

Standard relevant guild mechanic cards: Ghor Clan Rampager (bloodrush), Firefist Striker, Frontline Medic (battalion), Rakdos Cackler (unleash), Varolz the Scar Striped (gives scavenge), Mizzium Mortars, Cyclonic Rift (Overload), Rootborn Defenses, Trostani, Selesnya's Voice (populate), Blind Obedience (extort, borderline). Evolve, Cipher and Detain have not produced standard-quality cards.

Experiment One (with evolve) has seen Standard play.

New Mechanics Critique

New 05 Jun 2013 Asked by junkstory-blog-blog 21 Comments

It seems like the vast majority of new mechanics lately see little to no competitive play. I am a spike and I've never seen a cipher, battalion, extort, evolve, or detain card at a tournament table. I only see the remaining RTR block mechanics on one or two cards for select deck archetypes (Rakdos Cackler; Rootborn Defenses; Mizzium Mortars). I understand new mechanics are balanced for limited play, but it feels like some also become ignored for tournament play. What's your take on this?

I believe many of those mechanics are showing up in Standard. Examples, Question Marks…
