Cycle or Discard Wording

New 28 Apr 2020 Asked by ultwarrior 28 Comments

Re: The "cycle or discard a card" wording--this isn't the same as "when you cycle a card" as it works off things like Wild Mongrel or Merfolk Looter. "Cycle or discard" is the same was "when you discard a card", which makes sense in Amonkhet when you have graveyard mechanics fed by discarding through other means, less sense in Ikoria when cycling is the only major discard effect.

A fine point.

Disney EDH Deck Joy

New 26 Jul 2019 Asked by jjarnone-blog 62 Comments

I have been slowly altering all the cards to build an Disney themed EDH deck (Elder Disney Highlander) for a few years. Ariel Merfolk Looter, Sleeping Beauty Kiss of the Amesha, Winnie the Pooh Stuffy Doll. You get the idea. How happy is Thrones of Eldraine about to make me?

Quite happy.

Looter Mechanic Trivia

My birthday was a couple of days ago , but I forgot to ask, any trivia about looters?

The nickname came from Merfolk Looter in Tempest. To this day, I’m not sure why that flavor was attached to that mechanic. Unhinged made fun of “looter” by showing a creature stealing something.Happy Birthday!

Red's Looting Cost

New 12 Apr 2016 Asked by sofacoin 29 Comments

Do you have any insight on why red's looting (discard-draw) is costed worse than blue's superior looting? Rummaging Goblin v Merfolk Looter hurts to see!

Red is supposed to be worse at card filtering than Blue. It’s also worse at large ground creatures than Green. That’s how the color pie works.

Red versus Blue Looting

New 21 Jul 2014 Asked by hengeguardian 12 Comments

Hi Mark, Red looting is a cool thing, but it seems to be objectively worse than Blue's (see Merfolk Looter and Goblin Looter). How would you feel about making the discard part of the effect rather than the cost? This would reward players for using all their cards and becoming hellbent, and give red a much needed source of flavourful card advantage.

You’re are overlooking that red’s weakness is running out of steam which makes the ability have more power in a red deck. Also, we try hard not to allow red to have card advantage through drawing.

Red vs Blue Looting

In regards to red looting, you said mana would be the great equalizer, making it balanced against blue looting by making it cost less. Why then does Rummaging Goblin cost three and merfolk looter cost 2? I would think goblin would cost one.

That’s not what I said. I said that looting is naturally stronger in red because red’s all-in strategy often just needs a card or two to finish the job. This means that red’s looting will usually cost a little more.

Complexity Points Concept

New 29 Apr 2012 Asked by godavarism 0 Comments

Are complexity points actual points that can be quantified? Like, Grizzly Bears is 1 point, Merfolk Looter is 2 points? Or is it just a phrase you guys use to illustrate how design works under NWO?

No, complexity points is merely a concept to try to get people to wrap their heads around the idea that we have to limit how much complexity is in a set. There is no actual pointing.

Looting Cost Comparison

In regards to red's looting ability, you said d"Weaker effects get to cost less. The mana system - the great equalizer" Why then does mad prophet cost 2 mana more than merfolk looter

A) Merfolk Looter is very powerful.  B) Looting is very synergistic in red.

Color Pie Changes

New 22 Dec 2011 Asked by 100scariest-deactivated20190110 2 Comments

Now that the card faithless looting has been spoiled, can you explain the change to the color pie. Will there be a red merfolk looter now?

Looting is stretching to also include red. We did figure out how each color is going to interact with looting. Each color has its own niche but there is some overlap. As to what exactly those roles are, I’d prefer for the cards themselves to reveal what we’re doing.
