She’s the oldest of the original five Lorwyn planeswalkers. We didn’t know her plane of origin until we made her origin story in Magic Origins.Happy Birthday!

Planeswalker Reprints

New 19 Oct 2018 Asked by ironchefravnica 27 Comments

Regarding planeswalker reprints in a standard legal set, Liliana of the Dark Realms was in both M13 and M14. Liliana Vess, from Lorwyn, has turned up in three core sets (including M15, sadly, pushing out a Liliana of the Veil reprint at some late stage of development). Is it really a question of planeswalkers being reprinted in standard legal sets other than core sets?

The question implied other than core sets because most core sets with a planeswalker in it have had repeated planeswalkers.

Liliana Vess Anagram

Liliana Vess is an anagram for "A villianess". Was that intentional or coincidence?

The person who named the character, a man named Brady Dommermuth, swears it wasn’t on purpose, so I’ve chosen to believe it was subconsciously done.

Planeswalkers Frame Art

New 07 Sep 2015 Asked by itsdenied 32 Comments

I was wondering why out of all the planeswalker cards and printings there are 7 in total that don't pop out of their card frames. It seems to me that having planeswalkers popping out of their frames is indicative of their planeswalking nature. Yet Ashiok, Domri, Original art Kiora (the Crashing Wave), Nissa Revane, Duel Deck Liliana Vess, Sarkhan Dragonspeaker, and Teferi all stay inside their respective card frames.

Art does it when they can but not every planeswalker art has an element that can pop out.

Liliana Celebratory Info

New 18 Jun 2015 Asked by grohiikzeymah 104 Comments

Me and my Fiancé are now expecting. She's such a big lover of magic that if it's a girl we're calling her Liliana. Can we have some celebratory info on Vess?

Of the original Lorwyn 5, Liliana is the oldest and the only one to be a planeswalker pre-mending. She’s from Dominaria and we learned she had a brother for whom she cared very deeply. Liliana Vess anagrams to “A Villainess” but her creator Brady Dommermuth swears it wasn’t on purpose. (I’m a bit skeptical.) Let us know if the baby ends up being Liliana.

Nissa's Evolving Character

New 30 Jun 2014 Asked by miracle-falcon 49 Comments

I apologize if this has been asked before, but about the new Nissa... People were upset that Liliana of the Dark Realms didn't fit previous versions of Liliana, and I assume that's part of the reason why you went with the old Liliana Vess this time around. Might there be that same disconnect for the new Nissa, though? She was the elf planeswalker and now she's a green Koth. Surely that'll rustle the same feathers? (Not that I don't like the card, mind you - I like it a lot)

Elf planeswalker turned out too narrow so now she’s more nature centered.

Art Options for Liliana

New 29 Jun 2014 Asked by howler13 23 Comments

Even though Liliana Vess was added to M15 too late to commission new art, would it have been possible to use the art from the Duels of the Planeswalkers promo? Or any other pre-existing alternative art?

In addition to art issues, Liliana wasn’t scheduled to have a new card in Magic 2015.

Liliana Continuity

New 28 Jun 2014 Asked by rkama 36 Comments

As a Vorthos it sort of disappointing me that the original Liliana is coming back. Liliana of the Dark Realms would be in continuity, while Liliana Vess I thought was pre-Innistrad.

She’s still Liliana Vess.

Liliana Vess Timeline

New 26 Jun 2014 Asked by thesumofallnoobs 27 Comments

Hey Mark, I'm a fan from Magic histories. Up to now all Planeswalkers spoilers from M15 seemed to be connected with the flavour of their previous episodes, that means, Cursed Garruk, Nissa as the Worldwaker in Zendikar, etc... Why only Liliana went back in the timeline as Liliana Vess, instead of being connected to her previous chapter? Is R&D so powerful that can remove all flavour from a single card and make this mess or a misundertanding of mine? Thanks!

We looked at Liliana of the Veil but she was too good for Standard. Note that Lilana Vess is meant as a standard version of her not necessarily from a specific point in time in the story.

Planeswalkers Reprint Logic

New 24 Jun 2014 Asked by 3hip5me 61 Comments

I'm all for the reprinting of planeswalkers, but why on earth was Liliana Vess chosen for M15 over Liliana of the Veil, when the former is underpowered casual fodder and the latter is a constructed-playable, multi-format staple in desperate need of a reprint

Because I believe development thinks Liliana of the Veil is too strong for Standard.

Liliana's Mechanic Focus

New 22 Apr 2014 Asked by stillanotherquestionmark 41 Comments

I'm looking at the Liliana cards you've made so far, and with the exception of Liliana Vess' ultimate, nothing about her mechanically says "necromancer" to me. Is this something Wizards wants to change going forward, or am I just missing her necromancer elements?

Liliana’s lack of focus is why we started monitoring what each does so that in the future there will be more clarity.
