Glasses of Urza

Subtype Matching Rules

New 04 Jan 2024 Asked by aalgot 23 Comments

If when, kindred like types for other types so the incredibly strangely named “glasses of Urza” can actually be Urza’s as they are canonically. And so Nissa can still be herself despite no longer being a planeswalker.

If. The rules really don’t want us mixing and matching subtypes. I see the novelty of it, but it’s most likely not worth the trouble.

Kangee Pronunciation

New 02 Dec 2023 Asked by makesasound 28 Comments

Is Kangee pronounced with a hard G (as in "Glasses of Urza") or a soft G (as in "Gemstone Mine")?

I say it with a hard G, but I have no proof that’s correct.

Color and Type Changes

New 19 Sep 2022 Asked by jml1218 34 Comments

Hello Mark, when or if; a card that changes the properties of one color to another, or one permanent with another? ( example: " Black mana symbols are treated like Red mana in addition to their other colors". or "Replace 'creature' with 'enchantment'.") could something like that work?

Sunglasses of Urza exist, so things like that are possible.

Character's Item Naming

New 13 Sep 2021 Asked by urzaspancakes 30 Comments

What's the difference between "Character's Thing" and "Thing of Character" (e.g. "Urza's Armor" vs. "Glasses of Urza")?

Just different ways of naming something. No meaningful difference.

Enchantment Niches

New 13 Sep 2019 Asked by snescontroller 53 Comments

Glass Casket has me concerned. It feels like, ever since colored artifacts became an every-set thing, there just aren't that many mechanical niches for enchantments anymore. Artifacts get to also be creatures, cost generic mana, have tap abilities... the list goes on. The only thing enchantments can do that artifacts can't is attach to objects other than creatures you control.

Artifacts have had global effects since the game began back in Alpha (Ankh of Mishra, Black Lotus, Copper Tablet, Dingus Egg, Gauntlet of Might, Howling Mine, Kormus Bell, Meekstone, Sunglasses of Urza, and Winter Orb). The change is we’re allowing artifacts to have colored mana costs (and even this we’ve done for over ten years - just not at the current levels). This means the overlap between artifacts and enchantments, which has always been there, is a little more noticeable. The color pie is determined by the mana cost of the card, so if white can do something as an enchantment, it means it can do it as an artifact, The result of this is we have to lean a little more on the flavor to help make them feel different from one another.

Hi Mark, is there a place for Glasses of Urza in Modern?

Unlikely as the card isn’t very powerful.

Glasses of Urza Errata

New 05 May 2016 Asked by zombie-illithid 24 Comments

Why did Glasses of Urza get errata'd to having an activated ability with a tap cost?

It didn’t get errata. Early artifacts that said “Mono artifact” had the tap cost included as part of the definition of mono artifact.

Birthday Trivia

New 14 Aug 2015 Asked by behindyourfrontdoor 24 Comments

Hey Mark! It's my birthday and I've been so excited to ask for birthday trivia on either: Telepathy or Invisible Stalker. :)

Telepathy was me redoing the card Glasses of Urza from Alpha. The ability really made more sense in Blue and having to constantly tap it seemed unnecessary (and not something an enchantment would do anyway). I not only designed the card but also named it.Happy Birthday!

Sunglasses of Urza Cycle

When will we see the completion of the Sunglasses of Urza cycle? Was that ever meant to be a cycle?

I was not aware of it being a cycle. Illuminate me as to what you think the cycle is.
