Fathomless Descent

Fathomless Descent Wording

Could fathomless descent have said descend X, or would it have implied something entirely different?

We were concerned it would imply something that wasn’t true.

Keyword Complexity Issue

Why come out with a keyword that has 3 different meanings? Keywords are supposed to follow strict logic. You've created something worse than banding with Descent. Descent x, and fathomless Descent. Cards should not have to be researched to be usable.

Would it be better to have three different words? That seems significantly harder to comprehend.

Descend Keyword Choice

Why have fathomless descent instead of making it descent x?

Having “Descend <number>” and “descent <number>” mean different things felt wrong.

LCI Keywords Confusion

Hey Mark, loving LCI spoilers so far! There's one thing that I feel might lead to some confusion in the future though, Descend X, descended, fathomless descent... similar-but-not-the-same keywords are a bit confusing to track. How did it go during testing?

The original plan was the set design team was just going to pick one, but they all played so well, they ended up keeping them all. Jules is on my podcast this Friday and we talk about it.

Mechanic Vocabulary Issue

I think Descend X, “if you descended this turn”, and “Fathomless decent”, have a vocabulary issue like Haunt did. They all mean different things. Descend 4 is a condition (similar to delirium/threshold). “If you descended this turn” is an action (similar to “if you milled a permanent or a permanent died” which is “Revolt”). Fathomless descent is neither a condition nor an action; it functions closer to Undergrowth/Chroma as a counting mechanic. As a tiny amount of feedback, using vocabulary in 3 different contexts makes it more difficult to grok (and remember).

Would using three different words for things so mechanically connected not cause more confusion?
