Do you still wish Door to Nothingness said “Destroy target player”?

“Destroy target creature or player.” : )I do.

Winning Card Preferences

New 28 Nov 2023 Asked by anookee 28 Comments

Do you have any thoughts on the difference between cards that outright say "win the game" vs cards that effectively win the game (I.E. Felidar Sovereign vs Aetherflux Reservoir, Door to Nothingness vs Sawnspire of Ulamog, etc.). I've always been partial to the latter. Thanks : )

R&D, as a whole, also leans towards the latter.

Hypothetical Win-Game Cost

New 07 Aug 2022 Asked by slicehazard 50 Comments

Theoretically, how much mana would/should a "you win the game" (with no other requirements) sorcery cost? Bonus: What color(s) would it be?

Door to Nothingness has “target player loses the game” (not exactly the same in multiplayer) for WWUUBBRRGG. That’s the card I tried to have the rules text “Destroy target creature or player.”

Black's Door to Nothingness

New 23 Oct 2020 Asked by silentone2k 45 Comments

Talkong about weird "player" interactions and wording. Since black can kill planeswalkers, with a high enough cmc could black do a door to nothingness style "target player loses the game"?

It has to be a pretty tricky hoop to jump through, but flavorfully it could be monoblack.

Door To Nothingness Reprint

New 23 Oct 2020 Asked by brom-stormcrow 44 Comments

Door to nothingness basically removes a played from the game, its just worded "target player loses the game." Do you think if it were reprinted you could put "exile target player " on it?

The card was originally “destroy target player” in design, but the Rules Manager had us change it as that’s not something black border rules supported.

Un-mander Trivia

New 05 Oct 2019 Asked by raygallade 35 Comments

Mark, I’m in my 3rd year of teaching and it is 4 days after my 25th birthday. For my birthday trivia, could I get some new trivia about my #1 favorite Un-mander, Baron Von Count?

Door to Nothingness’s activated ability originally read “Destroy target creature or player”, but I couldn’t get the Rules Manager to sign off on it, so I saved it for the next Un-set. It took a while, but finally I got “destroy target player” onto a Magic card. Happy Birthday!

Door to Nothingness Trivia

I tap one of each color mana and play birthday trivia. What interesting fact can you tell me about Door to Nothingness.

The original rules text was “destroy target creature or player” but I was informed by the Rules Manager at the time that black border couldn’t destroy players. That’s how the ability ended up in Unstable.Happy Birthday!

Destroy Player Mechanic

Isn't "Destroy target player" in 5-color? See "Door to Nothingness". Not the exact text, but the same effect?

It is similar but psychologically (and slightly mechanically) different.

Designing a Set

New 15 Jul 2017 Asked by fatty-bo-hunt 38 Comments

So, I'm designing my own set, and I have a good idea of my mechanics and themes, but I'm kind of baffled at where to start building. How does design go about putting these pieces together? (P.S: I think the wording on Door to Nothingness should have been "Remove target player from the game.")

Birthday guy here! Can I get a trivia on my favourite card: Door to nothingness thanks in advance!

Door to Nothingness’s original rules text was “Destroy target creature or player.” I fought with the Rules Manager for months about the text but it got changed to the more traditional templating.Happy Birthday!

Destroy Target Player Concept

New 27 Jan 2017 Asked by shadowstar91 36 Comments

griggsofvinheim asked: Would you want un3 to have a "Destroy target player" card? I’d definitely design one. : ) ... technically we have one of those already; Door to Nothingness 'Target player loses the game.' that's close enough right?

Door to Nothingness was designed as “Destroy target creature or player.” but that is not what it ended up as. Oh no, “destroy target player” is a special phrase that has not yet graced a Magic card.

Destroy Target Player

New 22 Oct 2016 Asked by therealzerochaos 31 Comments

If Door to Nothingness ever gets changed to "Destroy target player", could we also get Platinum Angel changed to "You are indestructible. Your opponent can't win the game"?

“Destroy target player” is not identical to “Target player loses the game” so I wouldn’t ever expect errata. Also, it’s not clear the rules can even handle “destroy target player.”

Destroy Target Player Concept

New 22 Oct 2016 Asked by sorin-slackov-bored-of-innistrad 22 Comments

What would "Destroy target player" do? Just make them lose the game? Why go for the wording when something like Door to Nothingness already exists?

Because words matter.

On "Destroy Target Player": Didn't Door to Nothingness try to say that before being thwarted by the templating team?

It did.

Target Player Destruction

Isn't "destroy target player" essentially what Door to Nothingness says?

There is a big gap between “essentially says” and “says”.

Conceptual Player Destruction

New 14 Jun 2016 Asked by meandering-monotreme 38 Comments

We should have "destroy target player" do that "target player gains indestructible" can be a thing!

Door to Nothingness was designed to “destroy target player”. I got overruled by the Rules Manager.

Card Trivia

Hi Mark, today is finally my birthday! Can I get some trivia on one of my three favorite cards - door to nothingness, assault formation, or sundial of the infinite?

When I originally designed Door to Nothingness it said “Destroy target creature or player.” The Rules Manager sadly changed to the existing template. Happy Birthday!

Imaginative Card Art

New 04 Jun 2015 Asked by thefirewarde 51 Comments

Could the next un-set (or a supplemental set) print in black border cards with art that involves the whole card? IE Door to Nothingness sucking text into its maw, Lighting Bolt with electricity arcing around the frame and text box, Giant Growth with all text very large and the art pushing out against the boundary of the card...

I don’t think that’s what most fans of the Un-sets want for Un-3.

Would You errata a Door to Nothingness to "Destroy target opponent."?

tabakrules-deactivated20190523:
No thanks, although I’m pretty sure that’s how it was designed.
The original design was “Destroy target creature or player.” Too ahead of its time.

Planeswalker Ultimate Limits

could a planeswalker ever have a door to nothingness ult?

We like the ultimates to heavily skew the game in your favor but not win it outright.
