Diminishing Returns Law Impact

Ok, something I think people need to to remember, especially when it comes to a game that has been around as long as Magic has: The Law of Diminishing Returns. You can't keep doing the same thing and keep expecting growth long term. In order to keep something healthy and growing, you need to experiment and try new things.
Magic has the added benefit of being a multiworld piece of media, which means when one of these worlds inevitably fail to please the public (can't succeed everytime), they can put that world away for good, or until they can find a way to fix past mistakes. There is also the fact that tastes change over time, and what was once unpopular can become popular. Kamigawa is a good example of both.
Now, is that to say that you have to like new approaches to things like magitech or more urban settings, no. But these sets have their place in Magic. I just ask that people remember that the game isn't made for them particularly, but for the ever growing Magic audience, which incorporates people of different ages, ethnic backgrounds and life experiences. What you would call "Traditional Fantasy" is anything but to the rest of the world.

Well put.

Balance Between New and Returning Planes

New 09 Aug 2021 Asked by planeswalkershideway 44 Comments

Are there ever any worries that returning to a plane will simply lead to diminishing returns? I've heard lots of people say they're sick of Ravnica or didn't like the most recent return there for example - what is the optimal balance between new and returning planes like?

We tend to balance them roughly 50/50. For example, here’s the premier sets of the last few years;Ravnica Allegiances - returnWar of the Spark - return Throne of Eldraine - new2019 (1 new, 2 returns)Theros Beyond Death - returnIkoria - newZendikar Rising - return 2020 (1 new, 2 returns)Kaldheim - new Strixhaven - new Adventures in the Forgotten Realms - new (to Magic) Midnight Hunt - returnCrimson Vow - return 2021 (3 new, 2 returns)Do that’s 5 new sets and 6 returns, and War of the Spark was not really about the world, so while technically a return, it did explore very different mechanical space.

I don't know how I feel about Diminishing Returns making a comeback in Eternal Masters. It just won't be as good as it used to be.

Storm Mechanic Challenges

New 04 Sep 2012 Asked by explorenewmusic-blog 3 Comments

I've been lurking on this blog forever, and one point has bugged me enough to post this question. Couldn't storm be designed in such a way that the repeated effect had diminishing returns, thus casting 20 copies of it wouldn't particularly matter. without directly costing them, what if you had a cycle of storm cards where the white one was wing shards, black discarded a card, blue bounced a non-land permament, green gave +1/+1 until EOT, and red destroyed an artifact. How would these be broken?

We keep thinking we can fix storm and solve the problems it has. (“Yeah the relationship went horribly last time, but this time I can fix it.”) After you get burned enough times, walk away! There’s other fish (aka mechanics) in the sea (aka design space).
