Request for Griffin Themed Trivia

New 17 Mar 2022 Asked by snailonspeed 82 Comments

Hey Mark. Could I get some birthday trivia about an old favorite of mine, Retaliator Griffin or, failing that, the griffin tribe in general?

I don’t have any trivia on Retaliator Trivia, but I do have one on a different Griffin:https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/large/front/2/b/2bed19fa-e497-48de-8459-030e60fdc9a8.jpg?1562443742
Tethered Griffin is part of a rare 3-card cycle (that’s not a vertical cycle). It, Covetous Dragon and Emperor Crocodile were three creatures from Urza’s Destiny that was sacrificed if you didn’t control a particular permanent type (enchantment, artifacts, and creatures, respectively).Happy Birthday!

Emperor Crocodile Trivia

It was my birthday two days ago and I didnt have the chance to ask this because I was working- do you have any trivia about the face of the 9th edition green starter deck, Emperor Crocodile? I asked last year on my birthday proper but didn't get a response, I know you're completely flooded with questions. Just curious about a fav card from the first Magic thing I bought. : )

I made Emperor Crocodile in Urza’s Destiny as part of a three-card cycle along with Covetous Dragon and Tethered Griffin. Each was sacrificed if you didn’t control a particular permanent type (creature, artifacts & enchantments respectively). The cycle only had three cards because I didn’t want to use land and at the time there were only three other permanent card types. Happy Belated Birthday!

Dragon Design Approach

If the reason dragons are included in every set is because they're the most-demanded creature type, then how come nearly every one that Wizards makes is overcosted and unplayable? As compared to, say, angels -- most of the angels printed have use in constructed (Restoration Angel, Sublime Archangel, Angel of Serenity, etc.)

Perhaps the target audience of dragons isn’t the tournament player.  Also, we have made a few constructed dragons over the years. For example, Kai Budde became world champion with one (Covetous Dragon).

Izzet Artifact Synergy

While planning a Nicol Bolas Commander deck I came to notice something bizarre: There is not a single blue-red multicolor card that mentions the word "artifact". There are Crosis's Charm and Mishra, but both of them are also black. I find this strange. I always thought red was the color that cared the most about artifacts next to blue, with cards such as Bludgeon Brawl, Aladdin, Artillerize, Covetous Dragon, etc. How come Izzet doesn't get to play with artifacts, which seems like a natura fit?

Red is not #2 in caring about artifacts. It’s #2 (or #1 depending how you define it) at blowing them up. Red will repurpose artifacts from time to time but that still puts it at #3 behind black.
