Rules Vs. Card Ideas

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by krarkrosewater 49 Comments

Hi mark thanks so much for your blog.It must happen sometimes you work on a mechanic or card that everyone understands how its supposed to work and its clear what that card wants to do but the rules of the game cant technically allow for it to work. Can you share an example of something that seems simple but has never been done because of a rules issue?

The best example would be to look at the acorn cards of Unfinity. While a few we’re kept acorn for Legacy concerns, the vast majority of acorn cards simple don’t work in the rules. Here are some I get asked about all the time: Claire D'Loon, Joy SculptorFar OutGoblin BlastronautsGrand Marshall MacieHow Is This a Par Three? It Came from Planet GlurgLila, Hospitality HostessSolaflora, Intergalactic IconSole PerformerTrigger HappyTruss, Chief Engineer

can truss, chief engineer alter reminder text on cards? for example, can i change a food token's reminder text from gain 3 life to gain 5 life?

Changing reminder text doesn’t change how a card functions.

Hi Maro! Need un-judge-help! Can Truss, Chief Engineer turn a -N effect into a +N effect, or is the number itself being modified, not the value+number? Examples:Can Truss change a Planeswalker's -1 into a +2?Can Truss change a -1/-1 effect into +2/-1?

The number is being changed.

Fractional Numbers Rule

New 28 Jan 2023 Asked by mowu-moment 22 Comments

Un-rules question: Are fractions numbers for the sake of More or Less and Truss, Chief Engineer? e.g. could I activate Truss targeting a Traumatize to make someone mill three-halves of their library?

No. Truss only works with natural numbers.

What happens when you use Truss, Chief Engineer's ability to change the ranges on a card like Contact Other Plane so that the die roll values overlap, and you roll one of those overlapping values? Do you get both effects?

Yes.

Truss, Chief Engineer Query

New 15 Oct 2022 Asked by what-i-cant-hear-you 20 Comments

If you use Truss, Chief Engineer to change the number of possible targets for a spell (say, changing "three" to "seven" on Biogenic Upgrade), does it allow you to pick new targets or change distribution?

You have to change the number before targets are chosen, so much easier to do on an activation than a spell.

Un-Rules for Truss

New 05 Oct 2022 Asked by caretftu 24 Comments

I have some Un-Rules questions for Truss, Chief Engineer. First: Are First/Second & Once/Twice number words? Second: Can Truss change the Visit requirement for Attractions after you've rolled the Dice? Third: If someone casts Last Chance, and change it to "Take an extra turn after this two", does it counter the spell since it no longer makes sense or does nothing happen? Same question for any card that says "Up to one target card", does Truss stop the card from working by making it say Two?

First: No.Second: No.Third: If the new wording doesn’t make sense, it reverts to the old wording.

Name Changing

Can I use Truss, Chief Engineer to turn Wrenn and Six into Wrenn and Seven? Does that change the properties of what the card can do?

You can do it. It changes its name, but that has minimal mechanical meaning other than it lets you cast a second one and avoids things like Pithing Needle.

Convoke Effect of Chief Engineer

You said a card that grants convoke was an if, but it already exists: Chief Engineer.

I think they were asking for a card that gave all spells convoke.

Chief Engineer Discussion

I liked todays article, will you be talking about Chief Engineer?

Not in this series. I only had two columns worth so I had to limit how many cards I talked about. I do like the card a lot.
