Llorwyn Reception

New 02 Jul 2024 Asked by 3-slugcat-pilots-7-ornithopters 2 Comments

Hey Mark! How was the reception of Llorwyn back in the day? Tmk tonally it was much lighter than the average set. Did it have any issues being cutesy/lighter subject matter?I’m looking forward to Bloomburrow and was wondering if Llorwyn had any specific effects on it also

I believe the only block to perform poorer than Lorwyn, in our key metrics, was Champions of Kamigawa.

Changeling Inspiration Error

New 24 Mar 2024 Asked by razorofartorias 12 Comments

Hi Mark! In your two-part article Looking Back (and I think on a recent podcast too) you mentioned Mistform Ultimus as the inspiration for Changeling, but it's not a legendary creatures from Champions of Kamigawa, it's from Legions (I noticed because I started playing MTG on the Onslaught block).

It was a mistake.

Mistform Ultimus Correction

New 12 Mar 2024 Asked by czechasociallife 27 Comments

Mistform Ultimus deffinitely isn't from Champions of Kamigawa

Yeah, it’s from Legions. I’m not sure why I keep messing that up.

Plane Conception Duration

New 20 May 2023 Asked by beawol3-deactivated20230709 58 Comments

Which plane (as the setting, not the card) took the longest amount of time from original conception to seeing print?

An Egyptian-inspired plane was the back-up choice for Champions of Kamigawa block.

Kamigawa Spirit Trivia

New 11 May 2023 Asked by delicateturtleangel 45 Comments

Hi Mark! By the ancestrall right of birthday trivia, may I request some obscure knowledge about Spirits or old Kamigawa?

An early version of Champions of Kamigawa had a mechanic representing martial art moves. It didn’t really fit with the rest of the set and was removed. Happy Birthday!

Time Travel Set Possibilities

New 02 Mar 2023 Asked by ivorynightmare 53 Comments

Does brother’s war allow us maybe to go back in time and see planes that are now dead but back then are full of life and see what brought the death of the plane?

Going back in time for a premier set isn’t off limits. We’ve actually done it a number of times (Brothers’ War, Fate Reforged, Champions of Kamigawa block), but there has to be a strong narrative reason for it.

Designing Without +1/+1 Counters

New 29 Jan 2023 Asked by jjustin1379 52 Comments

I love the flavor of not using +1 +1 counters for all will be one. There is no growth on phyrexia so it makes sense. I hope the limited environment plays well. I dont think there have been any limited formats without a stat modifying counter. Was the limited environment tricky to design?

In Champions of Kamigawa, only one uncommon and one rare used +1/+1 counters. It requires designers to avoid a few common tricks we use, but no it wasn’t too hard to design. There are a number of designs where oil counters acted similarly to +1/+1 counters.

White Villains Existence

New 15 Dec 2022 Asked by christhestampede 63 Comments

Hello! Has there ever been thought given to a plane where white-aligned creatures are the villains? Like, an extremely authoritarian and overbearing government that, theoretically, is so strict in order to protect the populace?

The leader of the Phyrexians is a white legendary character, and her direct followers are white. Champions of Kamigawa also had a monowhite main villain, and a lot of his main followers were monowhite.

Difference Between Counter Types

New 28 May 2022 Asked by shes-a-naturaldisaster 31 Comments

Hi Mark :) I have a quick question: Why are divinity counters and indestructible counters two different kinds of counters? I play a myojin/shrine proliferation commander deck that would function a bit better if those were the same type of counters. I guess I was just curious as to why they were indifferent and if there were any plans to "errata" them to be the same type of counters since they are functionally equivalent. Thanks!

One just predated the other. I think the Myojin would have had indestructible counters in Champions of Kamigawa if such a thing existed at the time. I’m not sure what functional errata is created if you change one into the other.

Moonfolk Mechanic Insights

New 05 Mar 2022 Asked by dude1818 31 Comments

I just listened to your Champions of Kamigawa mechanics podcast. One mechanic you didn't mention was the unnamed moonfolk mechanic ({N}, Return lands to your hand: Effect.) Do you have any design comments on that one?

It’s just very hard to design with.

Legendary Return in Kamigawa Teaser

New 18 Feb 2022 Asked by theindecisivemess 52 Comments

In your Kamigawa teaser you said "a popular legendary creature from Champions of Kamigawa block returns in a new form" Now that the set has released can you tell us which card you're referring to? I swear this is talking about Hidetsugu, but my friends argue its Kiki-Jiki. Please help settle this

I was referring to Kiki-Jiki.

Common Criticisms of NEO

New 16 Feb 2022 Asked by heleor 51 Comments

What are the general dislikes about NEO that you're seeing? Is it primarily "this isn't like the original" or "I'm not a fan of the creative" or are there more specific or gameplay-related concerns?

The biggest complaint is “why didn’t you include <thing they liked from the original Champions of Kamigawa block>?”

Shrine Cards Timing Logic

New 14 Feb 2022 Asked by jjarnone-blog 39 Comments

Can you go into the reasoning behind why each of the cycles of shrines trigger at different parts of the turn? (CHK at upkeep, NEO at end step, and and three of the M21 at beginning of precombat main-phase)

I think they decided to have the timing maximize with the effect.

Improving Understanding in NEO

New 05 Feb 2022 Asked by ne4782 49 Comments

As a new-ish Magic player, the old sets that felt that most alienating when I came in contact with them were Lorwyn and Kamigawa; it always felt like I was supposed to have read some encyclopedia to figure out what everything was supposed to be. NEO doesn't seem to have that problem, everything feels much more understandable, so very well done on that front.

One of the problems original Champions of Kamigawa block has was the naming. It made the cards hard to grok (you often couldn’t tell what card type a card was by its name, for example) and added a layer of complexity that wasn’t needed.

Bringing Back Old Mechanics

New 02 Feb 2022 Asked by lgosvse 37 Comments

If Champions of Kamigawa block's mechanics were so disliked, why did you feel the need to bring one of them back? Couldn't you have just made a set that had only new mechanics?

That was definitely an option, but since we were returning, we felt we should do due diligence. Channel ended up allowing us to keep the as-fan of artifacts and enchantments up while still having the necessary amount of spell effects.

Channel vs Other Mechanics

New 02 Feb 2022 Asked by zealouskryptoniteenthusiast 56 Comments

Why use Channel and not Adventure, split, or dual face card?

Because channel was used in original Champions of Kamigawa block and there weren’t a lot of mechanics we felt we could return.

Popular Legendary Creature's Return

New 24 Jan 2022 Asked by ricardolongo 48 Comments

"• a popular legendary creature from Champions of Kamigawa block returns in a new form" - Isn't that the already previewed Hidetsugu?

It’s referring to a different legendary creature.

Storm Scale with Neon Dynasty

New 13 Jan 2022 Asked by cle-guy 33 Comments

Mark, can I get a maybe on a Storm Scale article for Kamigawa some time after Neon Dynasty is released?

My second Neon Dynasty preview column takes time going through all the mechanics from Champions of Kamigawa block.

Legacy Players and Kamigawa Block

New 06 Oct 2021 Asked by pacmantis 34 Comments

Do you have data on what percentage of current players were around for the original Kamigawa block? It’s wild to me that I’m 30 now and we’re returning to the plane that debuted shortly after my bar mitzvah.

We have data somewhere, but I’m not familiar with it. Our player average is slightly over ten years, so a assume quite a bit less than half were actively playing when Champions of Kamigawa came out. It will make up a higher percentage of the enfranchised players though.

FYI, Frostwielder from Champions of Kamigawa is a (nonlegendary) mage who uses ice to deal damage.
